I was taking summer classes in june and july and could not apply for internships this summer.

My Aunt works as the head accountant for a supplement company like 20 minutes from my house.

Would it be beneficial to my resume and to my experience to see if she will let me be an intern for her for 5-6 weeks in August and beginning of September before school starts or should i just wait until the fall career fair to start applying for legit internships with public accounting firms for next summer?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have any kind of accounting internship on your resume. It would probably help separate your resume from other accounting students applying for accounting firm internships in the future. But if it will come at the expense of doing anything really fun before you go back to school [eg going on vacation, etc] and you're already a solid student, I would think twice about it if you're in your younger undergrad years. With a good GPA and a decent resume from a school with solid recruiting, you should be able to get an interview with the firms regardless, and then at that point, it's all up to how you perform in those interviews.

In my experience, any accounting you can get your hands on is great. It gives you something to talk about and reflect on at job interviews in the future.

Just because she is “head accountant” doesn't mean she can get you an internship. But if she can, take it!

It is a “legit” internship from the supplement company (right?) and, IMO, is likely very worthwhile – hopefully from a learning standpoint, but if not, then it would be from a resume building standpoint.

Would help you get interviews later & give you something interesting to talk about during them. Much more valuable than a vacation. & it always suprises me how students are always suprised at the level of competition for interview slots & offers at top firms come recruiting time.

You're right. It probably was different at my university. If you had a solid GPA (>3.5), you would likely get an interview with the Big 4. Granted my university has a relatively small accounting department and is pretty “prestigious”.
