Seriously? What the *&^*^! 74 on REG, advice please

I was planning on taking FAR in mid August.

Should I instead continue to review REG and take it again first thing in July? I would push FAR to the end of August and start study for that now as well as keeping REG on review.

74 seems too close to walk away from right now. I can’t tell you how completely crushed I am right now, I feel sick.

(As a side note, I work in tax. The 60 previous score on REG was not a real attempt. I had paid for the test and couldn’t reschedule. I took that one cold.)

It sounds like you probably were weaker on Sims. That tends to be the case. When people get 74, they usually are Stronger/Comparable on MCQs and Weaker on Sims. When you get your Score Report and you are indeed weaker on Sims, then you need to practice more Sims in the Wiley book and software, especially the tax return problems.

Also, when I got a 74 on REG, I moved onto BEC and then went back to REG afterwards. But I already started studying for BEC the day after I took REG.

    jump right back into REG!

when i got my first 74 in REG i left and tried to pass other parts and you can see what happened (see my sig).

i agree with CPAMAN, its probably the sims that stopped you. i passed by doing the same thing as i did to get the 74 plus practiced a lot of sims

    REG-65,71,74,73,70,74,79
    BEC-60's,60's,69,71,76*,78
    FAR-67,66,65,79
    AUD-54,60's,65,83*,69,80
    *expired

    DONE

Yeah get right into Regulation…. It will be much harder if you try it in August. I had a lot of 74's, i understand your pain, drink some tequilla or whatever pleases you to get over the pain and move on…

    I wish you the best.

74…the worst score you could ever receive. This meant you studied and put time into preparation but you were probably killed by that “5 point range” of unlucky questions. I say jump right back into reviewing REG and take it first thing in July then jump into FAR.

    AUD-Failed (Waiting for Score)
    BEC-PASSED (First try)
    REG-Failed (Retake February 2013)
    FAR-Failed (Retake January 2013)

I'm in the same boat as you, got a 74 on REG as the first section I have ever taken. I guess it would help to study some sims off Wiley test bank but I believe that can only help you so much conceptually. The real exam sims are gonna be random as $%$# like usual so maybe this time around you'll be better prepared with a little bit of luck. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. Giving myself the weekend to pull my head out of … wherever it is. This hit me especially hard for some reason.

Will start FAR this week and do some REG SIM's & MCP's on the side, and then break for REG a week or two before I take it beginning of July and then will go back to FAR until August.

@bluegirl, I definitely recommend not studying for two at once. Especially FAR and REG. Tax rules and GAAP rules can be very different. I would choose to jump right back into REG, especially if you haven't started with FAR. FAR has a MASSIVE amount of materials. Go back to REG with a vengeance !

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

good idea @peanut. My goal was not to get behind in FAR study, but if I take REG 1st week of July, I should(?) be able to pull off FAR last week of August.

It will be tight, but I'll go for it.

@bluegirl, my third time taking REG I only studied about 5 weeks too. Wiley MCQs were key try going through them twice! I had to take REG 3 times too… third times a charm!!!

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

I took REG three times. Third time around, I read each chapter in Becker twice and did all the MCQs/SIMs 3-4 times PLUS did Wiley testbank tax MCQs/SIMs at least once.

I think reading the chapters, understanding the concepts and applying them on the MCQs/SIMs really helped me to pass it. Also use the research tab for the SIMs topics you aren't sure of.

Hang in there, you will pass it! Good Luck!

What kind of tax work do you do? How much did you study for REG?

    FAR(11/14/11)- 92
    AUD(01/04/12)- 91
    REG(05/30/12)- 93
    BEC(07/21/12)- 88

I do mostly individual tax, some business returns. I studied for about 5 weeks. I watched the Yaeger videos once, took good notes and then did a bunch of MCP's.

I didn't have time to rewrite notes and didn't do SIM practice.

My strategy is to retake REG 1st week of July. This gives me 3 weeks of study. My plan is to rewrite my notes, and do every MCP and SIM I can get my hands on.
