Second-Click Syndrome

When I work MCQ, I get about 50% of them right on the first click. The ones I don’t get correct, I usually get right on the second click. I see the correct answer and can usually figure it out without looking at any solution.

Does this happen to anyone else? I don’t know why this happens to me…and why I can’t get more right on the first click. I’ve had this problem with all parts of the exam that I’ve studied for. I’ve always trended the same – at between 1.3 and 1.5 attempts per question. And, my actual scores have been consistent…consistent, although not passing. I don’t know if there’s a cure for this syndrome, other than to keep working and working on MCQ.

2nd click is certainly better than 4th click! Occasionally I'll run into a question where I've immediately ruled out the correct answer and it ends up as my last choice.

Your “phenomenon” isn't that surprising though. Most MCQ have 2 close choices and 2 clearly wrong choices. So if your first selection is wrong, the correct answer is usually going to stand out from the remaining choices.

The “2nd click syndrome” always seems to happen when I'm left with two answer options that I'm unsure on..happened to me during the FAR MCQ sessions as well as AUD. It's just part of the learning process. Learn from the mistakes, recognize why incorrect answers are incorrect, move on, and don't make the same mistake.

MCQ, in general, is not my favorite question format. If you don't choose the right one, you get absolutely no credit. It's a very old-fashioned form of testing.
In school, I had two professors who gave partial credit for MCQ. One of them designed all the tests with as many as six right answers, and as many as six wrong answers
(if there were no correct ones, you were to leave the question blank.) I did well on her tests!! But, this will never happen for the CPA exam.
Needless to say, I've learned a lot from MCQ errors. The part that is difficult is remembering errors made 15 chapters ago at the end of a review course.
