Review by Multiple Choice or by Flashcards / Notes?

    Hello everyone,

Been lurking here a while and I am taking my first exam, FAR, on the 15th of January 2016. I have started my final review mainly by reviewing chapter notes and making sure i have a firm grasp on all the chapters. I have read a lot posts by people saying it is best to do hundreds, if not thousands, of multiple choice to prepare for the exam. I have found with FAR MC that I can barely squeeze in 60-80 questions before having to go to bed after working all day since they are heavily math based. Did anyone find it more beneficial to do a combo of some MC, Flashcards/Notes and Simulations similar to Becker’s Final Review? Is the MC way the only way? Has anyone been successful without doing it that way? I just feel like I would be wasting a lot of time getting through a smaller amount of material on VERY specific multiple choice questions. I want to make sure I spend my last week and a half as wisely as I can so all recommendations would be appreciated.

I'm wondering the same thing. Last time for my review I did more MCQs than I had ever done with any of the other sections, only to come up short. I'm still not convinced this is the best use of my time, but so many people on here swear by it, I'm having a hard time getting myself to deviate…

I understand the concept of doing the multiple choice because you come across different topics and specific ways of doing things which makes sense, but I don't really know how beneficial it is compared to doing it the other way. Since it is my first exam i have no idea and am wondering what everyones opinion is. Hopefully we can find someone who didn't just hammer MC.

@GuitarMan2016 agreed! You'll be thankful you did this section first. It's a brutal one!

are you saying you have not done any sims yet? you should go through those and do as many as you can. it is a different approach to the material and you learn to use the AL and discover which sections of the AL are used for what. you can search for the FAR SIMS LIST above and you will the topic for each.

i did not do flash cards for FAR but i am now doing them at night for awhile after i get into bed. they are a way to keep studying for BEC when i am too tired to do more mcq's.

    good luck!

I have been doing a combination of sims, mc and flashcards (made more flashcards when doing MC when i got something wrong) as i have studied the material. In my review i am now going back through focusing on flashcards and sims as a priority.

I would not stop mcq's even if you have done all of them at least once you want to keep doing a broad sweep while strengthening your weak areas. As tiring as it is now is the time to firm your grasp on the material. If this is your first exam you should do the aicpa practice exam just to get the look and feel of the setup and read all the instructions, see the calculator, see how the sims are laid out and how the instructions are provided. Takes about 30 mins to get it setup and do the runthrough.

I will be sure to review the exam practice before going into the exam. Thanks for the tip! I didn't even realize they had a whole practice exam to take!
