Hi all….gearing up for REG and I have some technical questions.

question 1: Tax tables, thresholds, phase outs, etc. I’m wondering how much time I should be spending on memorizing the various thresholds, phase outs, etc. on the tax portions of REG. Does the CPA exam give you a problem, for instance, where not being able to remember the standard deduction for HOH would prevent you from getting the problem correct? The EA exam was merciful in this regard in that they might have given you the standard deduction in the problem for HOH and Single and you had to use the correct one.

question 2: I will assume that all of the SIMS are tax related….anyone ever have a SIM that is not tax related?

As to your first question, it doesn't ever get that involved from my personal experience. Just have a general working knowledge and you should be fine.

As to your second question, all REG simulations as far as I know are tax-related.

    Thanks for both answers…..

When you get into taxation there are so many semi-related tax threholds and phaseouts, it is easy to get confused.

Re Q1: I had heard that you didn't need to know these amounts, but I had a question on my REG that required me to know the specific amount of standard deduction for HOH. It wasn't the main focus of the question but I had to know it in order to calculate the answer. And I didn't. As for other phaseouts, I don't remember having to know any of them.

Re Q2: There was one guy on here a few weeks back that said he had one Blaw sim. I would think that if you know enough to answer MCQs you'd be able to deal with a Blaw sim. It may have even been pretest.

    AUD - 88
    FAR - 90
    REG - 85
    BEC - 88
