I’m spending today doing all the Wiley SIM’s for all tax topics for REG.. Its a total of 25 SIMs. My question is, I’ve been extensivley reading on many websites, besides A71 about leaving 1.5 hrs for the SIM’s during the exam.. How do people do 5-6 SIM’s on the real exam when they are supposedly harder & longer then wiley & becker?! I spent 3.5 hours doing just the corporate SIM’s in wiley!!! I am really worried about this.. any one have any pointers?

I'm not sure I have much more to add. Mainly allow plenty of time like you have heard others say. One will be a research SIM, it should only take a few minutes max. The others will likely be tax. Glance at each of the other SIMs and choose an easier one to do first, it will get you points and confidence. As you take on the harder SIMs, do as much as you can and then use the research tab to get closer on the parts you aren't sure of (this is why you will want plenty of time.) Just be careful not to get bogged down in research. Stay focused. Its not likely that you will have time to go back and review the problems, make your best attempt and move on. If you are completely lost on problem and you are running out of time, remember to make attempts for partial points. Make your best guess and try to complete the problem as best you can.

    best of luck!

Skim through all the sims first so you get an idea on what your facing. Knock out the research sims within a few mins. I wouldn't suggest spending anymore time on it because its either right or wrong, no partial credit. Then tackle the sims that you believe your most comfortable with. Save the one you don't have a clue for last. To me, I think the point is to get as much partial credit as you can. This worked for me since I passed FAR. Also don't leave anything blank. Make your best guess possible even if it's a zero. Best of luck to you!

I would suggest you dedicate a few days to doing nothing but SIMS for Becker and Wiley. Get use to doing the research questions so on exam date you have a good idea how to find them. Just do them over and over and over again. In test day, I had about 2 hours for the SIMs or so although 1.5 is fine. I did exactly what ski did. I really recommend that people to practice the SIMS. I had 3 SIMS that were exactly like Wiley and for the rest I understood the “format” to get partial credit.

@cpaski how do you know the research sim have no partial credit? Since no one ever gets back their score with exact right/wrong answers. There might be some points given for the right passage but the wrong paragraph, but this is purely speculation.

Thank you guys for the helpful tips!

@CPASki & @mrcpa – you really got the same/similar sims from wiley for reg? Thats amazing! I wish I am that lucky.. I mean I understand them, they arent too bad.. just soooo time consuming I guess..

As far as the research wiley has about 15 or so I think. Should I practice researching them? I feel like Wileys research function is so outdated.. compared to Beckers. Which will I see on the exam for the auth. lit tab?

    Again — thanks guys!

@ ddtspir06: There was a discussion about it awhile ago on and someone said that no partial credit was given for research sims. He could be wrong/right, but like you said everything is speculation. 🙂

@futuremdcpa. I used the Becker research even for the wiley question. The Becker is pretty much just like the actual exam. They key is to try to identify the key words. As far as the SIMS. Remember for Becker to do all the SIMS even the old ones from 2007 or w/e year it goes. You will do fine. Good luck!!
