They are definitely tested often. Not only on FAR, but you will probably come across them on AUD and BEC as well. Definitely worth taking the time to memorize. They're not that bad and there are patterns to them (the name of the ratio is often based on the denominator if that helps; ie, the inventory turnover is COGS over inventory; the receivables turnover is sales over AR; etc).

As far as the manner in which they are tested, they may give you starting/ending inventory balances, sales, and the gross margin percentage and ask you to calculate inventory turnover, as an example.

Thanks yeah I am definitely going to study them. Are Industry averages given in problems? I assume they would

As far as having to memorize what a typical turnover ratio is for an industry? You definitely do NOT have to know that.

However, be prepared to answer what it means to have a certain # for a ratio, and how increases/decreases in the numerator/denominator will affect your ratio.

They like to ask questions such as “your asset turnover ratio is .75 and you buy additional assets on credit; will your ratio increase or decrease?” Worth memorizing or at least being able to work it through mentally whether equal changes to the numerator or denominator will increase or decrease your ratio.

You'll never be expected to know something as specific as industry averages. You may be asked to compute different ratios (turnover, liquidity, quick, etc.), or interpret what the change in a ratio from one year to the next means.

was just inquiring abt ratios and apparently in BEC it is used a lot and not that much on FAR. Best bet is for you to ask the FAR study group.

My FAR exam didn't have any of the ratios but then again, that is pure luck.

    FAR - 78
    AUD - 82
    REG - 79
    BEC - 78

@trish: I think that is the key. I've found that people that waive their hands score higher on the exams than those that do not… 😉

As far as tricks go…wish I had some secret formula to beat the exam. Unfortunately it's all been said before. Watch the lectures if your study prep has them. Do MCQ practice. Leave yourself time to review.

I kind of lucked out because I was able to take the exam while in school, so I wasn't juggling a job or family. I also worked for a CPA test prep company part time. So I was constantly around the material (work, school, self study). Working for the test prep company helped a lot because I got to see what areas of the exam candidates struggle with most. In order to help them out I had to really understand the material. So come exam day it was second nature.

If you have any areas you're struggling with for certain sections let me know and I can try to help you out on specifics.

@ WaivingMyHands_ALOT …Amazing job! totally amazing congratulations. What is more amazing is how you are such a humble person for downplaying the fact that you did so well because you are simply just smart and focused :).

I suck at how changes effect ratios any advice would be appreciated.

PS … I am still gonna wave my hands while I sit the exam…….just in-case 🙂
