Question regarding education requirements

I was thinking about going back to graduate school next semester, but then I realized that means $12,000 out of my pocket to complete the program because I don’t get tuition reimbursement at work (I know my job sucks). I’m not in poverty, but I don’t make a ton of money either and $12k is a lot of money and then I have all my student loans that I’m still paying off.

I got out my evaluation report from the Florida Board of Accountancy and it reads:

Accounting Education Program: Hours Received-30 Hours required-36

    General Business: Received-40 Required-39

If I read this right I only need 6 more hours of upper level accounting classes, am I correct? That way I could take these two classes and take some others at the local community college (way cheaper) like Music, Plastering, or something. Would that work? Thank you.

I don't even think you need to take anything other than an accounting class- maybe 1, maybe 2, depending on the total credits the class is worth and whether you are talking about semester hours or quarter hours- or however that works. In WA state I needed 150 semester hours, so being 6 short means that I one class likely wouldn't have cut it.

does it need to be an “upper level” accounting class or just accounting? Around here our community colleges don't offer much in terms of upper devision type stuff.

    You're so close though!

I would take the six semester hours (2 classes) at a university and I'm pretty sure they need to be upper level courses. Then I would just take the other three classes at the local community college.

@CPATerminator – I changed majors and schools after being very close to graduation so I have 224 hours. Most of them are Political Science and Sociology but Louisiana let me use those towards the 150 hours. If I could, I'd let you use the 74 I'm not using!

In Wisconsin we had to have the 150 credit hours done before we could even take the exam. And community college credits didn't count unless they had been accepted by an accredited 4-year institution.

    FAR - 92 (4/27/12)
    AUD - 96 (7/17/12)
    BEC - 92 (8/30/12)
    REG - 91 (11/12/12)

You should be fine. I got my 150 through my undergrad. In order to get to them, I was able to count some of my high school classes that provided me with college credit, my second major in Management, and a Jewish studies minor. Combined with some random liberal arts classes such as “Intro to Detective Fiction,” “Intro to Science Fiction,” “World Regions,” and “Creativity and the Aesthetic Experience.” As long as you meet the accounting and business requirements, the other credits can be any subject.

    BEC - 90 PASSED
    FAR - 84 PASSED
    AUD - 93 PASSED
    REG - 84 PASSED

    I DID IT!!!!
