Question for all of you.

I am currently employed at a small CPA firm and have been for 2 years. Today I get a message from someone I used to work with that there are two job openings where they work. There’s probably a better chance of upward mobility, higher pay, and work year round. At my current place I sometimes get stuck with some pretty shitty administrative jobs.

Being that it is mid-January. Would I be wrong to take this new job if I was to receive an offer?

It’s not a guaranteed thing but I decided I would go for the interview and see what they offer.

Any thoughts?

Well if you skill the interview it will be eating at you that you had a chance at something better and blew it. On the other hand you can go to the interview and get a feel of how prosperous this opportunity can be. In other words, you won't know til you try. Go and decide from there more money or the opportunity to make more money.

OMG! I am in the EXACT situation! I work at a very small CPA firm and I also get stuck doing stupid admin work. I have an interview today at a much larger firm and if I get it, I am not going to think twice about taking it. Don't feel bad for your employer, its part of running a business.

Anyone that would be upset with you for taking a better opportunity is selfish at best and a terrible person at worst. If the opportunity presents itself and is going to make your career more successful (whatever that word means in your eyes) than you have to take it. MJ said you miss 100% of the shots you dont take.

Go on the interview. Don't “feel bad” for your current employer–this is a business decision and you must separate your emotions.

That's the beauty of this chosen career, the mobility. It's nothing new, and your current employer won't be shocked – if they're honest they've probably done the same thing in their careers at some point. Jump around, climb the ladder, get a better salary or work/life situation for you

OP- go to the interview and hear what they have to say. If it's better, go for it and don't worry about your employer. Give 2 weeks notice and wrap up what you can and don't leave a mess for the new staff member or rest of the staff.

It's nice you want to think about your employer but you need to look out for yourself, too.

I think you should go to the interview, weight your options, and make the decision that is best for you. In the accounting field (especially CPA firms), people always move around.

However, one thing to be very careful about – make sure you don't burn any bridges. You never know who you will run into again in your future and you want to make sure you left on good terms with people. Give your 2 weeks notice (maybe even more than 2 weeks if you are able) and make sure you wrap up anything you have open and update everyone involved as to the status.

I went from public accounting to corporate and I left on great terms with everyone – had numerous people tell me that if I needed anything, to always feels free to call them. To this day, I still see many of the people I used to work with and have to maintain a working relationship with them because my company is one of their clients. It would have looked terrible if I left on bad terms or left anyone in a bad place when I left my public accounting job.
