I’ve worked in public and private accounting for six years. I’m almost done with the exam and i have come to the realization that i’m just not the typical office workers. I’m looking to do something else with the CPA license maybe teaching, training, etc… If there’s anyone who frequents this board that has a phd in accounting or is pursuing one please share your story of what lead you to that path. I would love to teach and also have the freedom to do other things that interest me…

Thanks in advance for the insight

I will finish my MBA in accounting plus the CPA this year. With this combination (equivalent to a PhD) I can teach undergraduate and MBA courses also. I don't see the benefit of doing a phd in accounting, maybe try for an MBA. At least here in PR, MBA + CPA = PhD pay rate, Not sure about in the states.

I have a masters degree already, but from the research i've seen and the professors i've spoken with. At the current level I could teach as an instructor. According to the hierarchy is considerably less than those classified as a professor or assistant professor. Most of the PhD programs i've looked (at least at the top schools) want you to have a Masters and CPA license. I know from teaching prospective I qualify to teach basic courses like principles of accounting etc…but for anything considered upper level it's a no go with a PhD.

    CPA_WDJ,

I too have thought about teaching… I was told that if you had a Masters and a CPA license you would be able to teach @ the community college (or lower) level. If you want to teach @ a 4-yr college/university, a PhD seems to be the ticket.

“…i'm just not the typical office workers” — Glad to know I'm not alone! I am also looking for the freedom to pursue other interests as being tied down to one firm does not appeal to me whatsoever…

I've also researched this as well, especially since there's this “shortage” of PhDs. If you haven't already, check this website out: https://www.adsphd.org. However, this shortage is only felt across AACSB-accredited colleges – and – this program only accepts those enrolling in AACSB-accredited PhD programs. Though as previous posters have said, you should be fine to teach private & 2-yr community colleges at your current education level. I am personally looking to get my foot in education by starting out as an adjunct through my local technical college.
