Any auditors out there have any pet peeves? I’ve got one, when you ask a client for support for a complex journal entry they posted and all they give you is a printout from the accounting system of the posting.

On the opposite side of Kricket, when an auditor asks on Jan 15 for a Q4 941. My response was something to the effect of “bwahahaha”. She's obviously never dealt with ADP before. Would be lucky to see it by February!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

My pet peeve ABOUT auditors is when they ask why accumulated depreciation changed. Um huh. Looked forward to that question every year. FYI it's called depreciation expense.

My favorite auditors, internal, are the ones that you can sense the excitement in them when they find an error of yours. The lovvvvvvveeeeeee to come tell you how your account is out a couple hundred bucks, and that they are going to have to write it up to inform ya boss. After they tell you this, they finish with a smirk to let you know how omniscient they are. That is when you tell them to sum that blunder up in their report, you write off a couple hundy bucks off in your sleep son, my boss is going to love that IA spent two weeks on an audit and got excited about some rounding errors. Book it

Omg, are these newbie auditors @candothis and @msd87? I don't know why they didn't ask their seniors before asking the questions. That is sad and embarassing.

@supervisor Sometimes they were newbies but not always.

How's the studying going? Keep your fingers and everything else crossed, pray and anything else that I find out that I am finished with the exam next week!!!

@msd87, I was referring to the peeps you were talking about in your post and whether or not they were new auditors. Kind of sad that they have 5+ years of experience and going after immaterial differences.

@candothis my study is going well. Actually feels like I'm taking a break. The tax stuff just clicks for me. I actually enjoy it. I am PRAYING PRAYING PRAYING for you. Fingers crossed!!!!

Oh what did I start? Lol.

I will admit though, I have witnessed other auditors ask the dumbest questions comparable to the accumulated depreciation question. It seems that no matter how much training/education someone gets, you can't teach common sense.

haha I didn't mean to open up a big ole can of trouble here. Looks like we might have a CPA rumble on our hands…..

candothis: depreciation expense. I LOVE that one.

On the other side of the coin I worked with this one senior for three years who was AWESOME. So awesome she was promoted to manager and rolled right off my account. She and her team asked good questions and understood what they needed to really get to the root (Rather than go through 5 additional unnecessary rounds of “I need more data” on the same topic). Believe it or not I don't like auditors that are TOO easy, I want to be sure I have a solid blessing. Balance is wonderful…

My biggest pet peeve about being an auditor? When a new client recommends a restaurant that is not so great. Come on man, I'm from out of town and spend more than half the year in a hotel room and you expect me to like your $12 bread and ham foofooey sandwich?

Give me a good place worth my dinero! Haha

Yeah I get reimbursed, but the physical money is coming out of my wallet and it feels like I am paying.

Not really a pet peeve, more like a let down. Lunch is the best part of my day, don't ruin it!

My biggest pet peeve is when I am working with a client that still does manual entries, as in everything is handwritten on green ledger sheets. Could you at least put it in excel, so I don't have to? Since I am low man on the totum pole, I always get these clients. We do governmental and NFP audits, and some of the entities are very small. Another pet peeve, clients who don't reconcile thier bank accounts and expect us to do it.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

@msd87 – I always try to be nice and send a list of necessary documents 4 months prior to the audit. We don't start the day after year end so they have time, besides I wouldn't want to walk in while they are still reconciling bank statements, which I refuse to do for them. If they don't have something on the list, I would rather know it in March or April prior to the report due date 6/30.

@mla1169 – Most of my clients are using QuickBooks so they should have the 941's.

@cando – Bwahahahaha!! That is hilarious. Please tell me that is an exaggeration and that didn't really happen!!! 🙂

I think this thread is priceless!
