Passed FAR using Becker?

I am currently studying for FAR using Becker. Initially, I was watching the lectures, then working the required and supplemental MCQs. I found myself spending a significant amount of time on the supplemental MCQs, which prolonged my starting the next lecture. After realizing I was running out of time, I finally decided to work only the required questions, and then move onto the next chapter.

After I finish F9, I plan on reading each chapter in the text (focusing on the highlighted/underlined passages) and then reworking the required MCQs (1,188). I don’t know if I will have time to complete the supplemental questions (an additional 536).

Has anyone here passed FAR, without completing Becker’s supplemental MCQs?

You can skip F8 and F9 supplemental questions, as I did also. Nonetheless, you should try to do as many from the other chapters, the really help to grasp some concepts better.

The supplemental MCQ's are nice but I would focus on the SIMULATIONS…I only did the MCQ's (required and supplemental) and was caught completely off guard when I got to the simulations since I had never done any…Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely review the Sims – and try to squeeze in as many Supplemental MCQs as possible.

Not that I would “highly” recommend, but for FAR.. the supplemental were soooooo long, so I kind of skipped through them too. But definitely do the sims and do the final exam. Whatever you get wrong in the Sims or Final Exam, go back and find out why you got it wrong.

Try to read every chapter in full. Don't just read the highlights.. if you read all the detail.. it will come in handy during the sims… trust me trust me trust me 🙂 You never know what sims you will get.. the sims in Becker are great practice but they aren't EXACT on the exam..

I concur. Review the sims, I did all the questions but I began studying waaaaaaay in advance where i had enough time to do all the questions. I found viewing the lectures twice very beneficial as i never read the texts for any of the sections of the exam.

    I really appreciate the feedback.

I JUST finished F7's lecture and required MCQs. So far, I've completed all required MCQs for F1 – F7. I am hoping to start and finish F8 and F9 in the next week. Then, time to read the text, rework the MCQs (all if I have time), and review the Simulations.

I am taking FAR 2/25. I was hoping for 2/28, as I would have an extra weekend to study – but it was full when I scheduled.

Wow, you have me beat. I just finished F1, and my exam is scheduled on 2/28. Looks like I will need to pick up the pace significantly. I took REG on 1/18 and considered rescheduling FAR, but since we are not going to get our scores back until March I decided to go for it. Hopefully I will pass one of the sections.

I used Becker for FAR, and only did supplemental questions for F1 and part of F2. F2 supps really discouraged me, until I read somewhere on this forum that F2 supps were harder than the other chapters (definitely a relief). Still, I was one of *those* people that were trying to pass exams before 2011 changes & was in a crunch for time. I felt like I shouldn't move on to the supps until I was ready, so I focused on learning the concepts as best as I could by redoing HW MCQ's for the topics that were hardest for me, repeatedly. Before the exam, I was confident that I knew most of the concepts very well, but it was my first exam, & I wasn't confident that it was enough. There were a number of topics that I didn't have time to do over more than once, and others that I simply could not get through my head (certain areas in deferred taxes, pensions, the usual). I ended up getting an 82!

The bottom line is… it IS possible to pass FAR using Becker, without doing the supplemental questions. However, I wouldn't recommend it. Whatever you do, do it well. Learn as many of the concepts as you can–don't move on until you're ready, but don't allow yourself to dwell on one topic for too long. Otherwise, you spread yourself too thin, and you will bombard yourself with information that isn't going to stick. During the exam, think each question through–be confident that you learned that particular concept, and you WILL be able to back into the answer or narrow it down to an educated guess. If you come to a question that you know you didn't study (& you will), guess or skip it until you know you have enough time to try for an educated guess.

I did all the regular questions.

I tried the F8 and F9 supplementals and quickly decided that they sucked and I no longer wished to attempt them.

So my advice is exactly the same as Herbert. Skip F8 and F9. If you have time, maybe just try them once and see how you do, but don't get too discouraged if you fail at them, because trust me, they are brutally hard. Try to do and understand the other chapters' supplemental questions, though.
