My resume was given to a principal in the firm by a prominent client of theirs. He than passed it to a partner and he is calling me tomorrow. Is this standard practice? I can’t decide if its a true phone interview or more of an informational call. I’m preparing as if it’s a regular phone interview.

Assume it is a phone interview and prepare accordingly. Most likely the partner is going to make a decision as to whether he wants to bother with a face-to-face interview. Partners are VERY busy. Make sure you thank him for his time. (It's a small gesture but I certainly remember candidates who send thank you emails and thank you cards or say thank you because so much is taken for granted these days.)
