    Hey guys,

I was just wondering, if you were to get a JE question in the SIMs and you correctly filled in the journal entry accounts but got the actual numbers wrong- would you get half the credit?

    FAR 4/9/12- PASSED
    BEC 7/13/12- PASSED
    AUD 8/16/12- Ughhh 71, Rematch: 90!!!
    REG-12/6/12 PASSED

You would get partial credit, yes. I'm not sure how they weight each blank within the SIM so I couldn't tell you if it was half credit or not.

A good exam trick if you are out of time is to put zeroes in the empty number cells. Hope you some partial credit is better than nothing.

When a simulation is given, not all the JE spaces must be filled right? Like are some unassigned, or do they give you an exact number that you'll need.

    FAR 4/9/12- PASSED
    BEC 7/13/12- PASSED
    AUD 8/16/12- Ughhh 71, Rematch: 90!!!
    REG-12/6/12 PASSED

We have to be careful with exam disclosures but make sure you read the question carefully. Remember they want to trip you up so you may see a JE with 4 lines but you only need to fill in 3 of them. Good Luck.

Sometimes a journal entry isnt necessary and there is usually a drop down that says “No entry necessary” or something to that effect. Leaving a cell completely blank will almost always result in an incorrect answer. I cant think of any examples where you would purposely leave a cell blank.

I can't think of a good example either but my point is that you have to read the questions very carefully or you will start filling in a journal entry when you should have put “No Entry is Required”. Now that I think about it if you had a question on dividends or stock splits and you had to do all of the entries required, when you got to the memo entry would you put 0's in the cells or leave those blank?

Duh! Now I know what you mean, mini! If you don't select no entry necessary or whatever it says then we need to put SOMETHING in every cell. Thanks dude! I owe you one!

Mini-Are you thinking that if there are four lines for a J/E and no J/E is required, that we should select no J/E required for all four lines?

    Good luck, Kricket!

Like what Kricket said, if no entry is needed for something, then you must select “No Entry is Required.” Usually in the instructions will warn you about that because that answer is required in order to receive credit.

However, let's say for a particular question, you only need to make one Debit and one Credit and you have 4 entry lines, then you can leave the last two entry lines blank.

hi, y'all. there is still a question about making JEs. does the order matter? becker software marked me wrong when i mixed up the JEs order. will it be the same case in the real exam? now im panicking >.<

No the journal entries on the exam are personally graded I believe, while Becker is programmed for things to be in a specific order so don't worry about which order you place them in!

    FAR 4/9/12- PASSED
    BEC 7/13/12- PASSED
    AUD 8/16/12- Ughhh 71, Rematch: 90!!!
    REG-12/6/12 PASSED

While the JEs are not personally graded, @mg is correct that the order doesn't matter (other than debits first).

I have searched the AICPA's website looking for something that would answer the question about the order of JE's on simulations. I found nothing. I downloaded and took the tutorial exam for FAR because that one was the most likely one to have JE's and this is what I found.

Sim #3 was about a change in estimated useful life and depreciation method. The depreciation expense was the amount they wanted. I figured out the depreciation expense in Year 4 and when I did the entry I reversed what I would normally put.

Normally my entry would look like this:

    Dep Exp dr

    Acc. Dep cr.

    So I put

    Acc Dep cr

    Dep Exp dr

When it graded the exam, you don't get an actual score but rather you get to see the correct answers, and this is what it showed for this particular Sim as the correct entry.

    Dep Exp dr

    Acc Dep cr

After all of this I 110% agree with @minimorty that order doesn't matter as long as you put debits first.
