My FAR score Dropped 22 points

Is it normal to have my FAR score dropped in Q2 by 22 points? I scored a 74 in Q1 this year and then scored a 52 in Q2. This was my 4th time taking the exam. The very first time I took the exam with a one week of studying got me a 62. Then 71 in the next try. I will be retaking it in December again. I thought my last time taking the exam was my best. I have no idea what might had to happen to get that score. I never scored in any exam below 62. If I received a 70 or 65, I would have understood. But a 52. What should I do? Is it even worth doing an appeal. It costs $550.

What did your score report say and how did you feel you did on the sims?

No, it's not normal. No, it's not worth appealing. One test does not build from any other….study like you are starting over each time!

I think it is Jeff that says about retakes, “You don't just need N points (Where N equals 75 minus your current failing score), you need 75!”

I hit the exact same score in Q2.

In Q1 I took it with only studying a couple weeks (kind of a hail mary pass) scored a 54 I think

I studied for 2 months- including 2 weeks full time and just gota 55 Q2.

I'm hoping they'll extend my score on my first passing exam or it dropped off. Waiting to hear back on that.

@SallyCPA I have not received my score report yet. I felt I did well on the sims. The time I received the 74, I did not have time to do the research questions. This time I did better than the time I got 74 on sims. I knew how to answer almost 80% of the SIM I got.

I got the score report and it was weak in all sections. It is hard to believe that I could score that low knowing it was my best FAR exam taking.

Its funny how it seems that worse you feel walking out the better you do, and vice versa too. My only thought would be did you study the same way? Jeff always says if you get a 74 you are not just 1 point away on a re-take, you need to re-study from the beginning.

It happened to me too. I was so close to passing, but the 2nd time I felt confident, but my score dropped drastically. I actually blamed the energy drink that I took before my exam. I thought I did well, but the drink might cloud my brain, so I ended up picking up the wrong answers, I think. After the result, I purchased another test bank and pounded out for 3-4 weeks. Anyways, things happen. Please just move on and start over. All the best.

@TaxKeep is right, there are no correlations to your scores. Whether it is a 54 or 74, it's not a 75. The CPA exam is tricky, one word can throw off the entire question and make the answer different. When practicing for the MCQ scrutinize the wording of the questions you got wrong. Also, do not memorize the answers. You should be able to have an idea of what the answer is before looking at the answers.

I highly recommend Ninja MCQs and Gleim for simulations. Gleim MCQs are great too but the questions seem to be on difficult mode, if you are up for the challenge you can definitely score high if you do well practicing with Gleim.

Its not worth beating yourself up over this , although it is difficult to digest I agree.

You just need to get a 75. Perhaps you've memorized your study materials and test banks? Try a different test bank and change your approach. For instance, study the sections backwards. My first exam I got a 74, I mistakenly thought I almost had it and studied some more before taking it again 3-4 weeks later. I got a 72. It was then that I realized I needed to start from scratch. Sorry to see that you've lost credit. Push on this so you don't lose more credit !!

@yulla, I wanted to know whether you used ninja mcq exclusively or supplemented them with the other material?

An anomaly that I'd definitely question….I'd almost be inclined to say that your exam was mis-scored or something, to drop that many points. But, cheaper to retake than to appeal. The CPA exams get crazier by the day and for every person who knocks out four in one window while working in public full time, there are like 80 of us who actually have to figure out a strategy that works. Unfortunately, it's not even worth suggesting a strategy because what works for one person rarely works for the person next to you. And yeah, as I say in my subject line, if you walk out of Prometric wanting to shoot yourself in the head, you passed. And if you walk out feeling like the top of a tree, chances are that you really got blackballed and will be re-taking it.
Having said that, I hope you prove them that your last score was a mistake by getting a really high score next time!! 🙂
