MLK Jr Day – When to schedule FAR

I am starting with a Big 4 on Jan 2 and trying to decide when to retake FAR (assuming I do not pass). I was hoping to take it Sat, Jan 5 but I talked with my recruiter and found out I will be out of town for training Jan 3-4 and 7-11 with an optional workshop on Jan 5. I am thinking it would be better to stay through vs driving back for the weekend, but I’m not sure what is normal. So that means Jan 5 and Jan 12 would prob not be ideal test days. Just realized MLK Jr day is the following Monday (21st) and am curious if anyone knows if Big 4 auditors usually work that day or if it is a holiday. The day is a holiday at my current job in industry, but the accounting dept works it due to year end and floats the holiday to a different day.

I put in my two weeks and will have time off in Nov and Dec to study. I really want to take FAR as early in Jan as possible due to busy season, learning curve, travel, etc. But I am struggling with when! My recruiter said that I could do the optional workshop in July instead if I wanted to test that Saturday. I could also take it that Saturday in my training city to avoid the carpool dilemma.Or should I just take it at the end of Feb? Please help!

I am up against my 18 month window and have to pass by 2/28. So next window is my last shot.

At the Big Four firm I interned with last winter we did not get MLK Jr. Day off, same goes for Presidents Day. I would assume it is the same across the board.

Thanks, soxfan866! It makes sense, but would have been awesome if that worked out as a solution.

Any advice on the importance of taking it early in Jan before busy season takes off vs. end of Feb? And if Jan, any advice on how to finagle the scheduling?

I'm probably not the best person to speak to this considering I've only had an internship and haven't started taking the exam yet, but I would say get it out of the way before busy season. There's no telling how busy you'll actually be because in my experience (albeit very short) it really depends on the team you end up on. As far as taking the exam during busy season, I'm pretty sure that was not allowed at my firm. You might be able to get away with it if the manager on the team is on board or if you can schedule on a Saturday when you're not working. I would try talking with client serving folks at the firm to get some advice just because recruiting sometimes had a tendency to tell you what you want to hear. Good luck!

I don't know about you but I sleep terribly when I'm out of town and I wouldn't want the added pressure of taking an exam in an unfamiliar area.

My advice – take it before busy season if you can reasonably fit it in. Otherwise you'll have to be really dilligent with your study schedule to make sure you don't get behind.

On the other hand, what makes you think you failed? Maybe you passed and this is a moot point?

    I passed in 2012!

    BEC - PASSED - I'M DONE!!!
    AUD - PASSED (finally!!)
REG - PASSED (Twice - lost credit first time)
    FAR - PASSED!

MLK becomes a floating holiday–so you'll be working! Also, have fun at DU!

@Rebecca_AZ – You are right. It could be a moot point, but with how little I was able to study due to corporate budgets at work, I am assuming the worse. This delayed score release isn't helping! I just want to know so I can plan!

@soxfan – Good advice about asking my peers vs. recruiters. Sad, but true.

@acamp – Not sure what DU is yet, but thanks!

Thank you all for the advice and info. I will probably take it that first Saturday, if needed. That way my time studying in Dec doesn't go to waste when I get busy working and have less time to study.

Rebecca_AZ – I guess you were right. It was a moot point after all!

Now I just need to give REG hell so that I don't have to revisit this thread when planning my retake.
