I know of the many career opportunities for auditors available in the private sector, but what are the opportunities for tax accountants. I’m happy to progress to senior tax associate but have no interest in making it up to supervisor or any position above. I’ve passed the CPA and have my MST with a couple of busy seasons, but I’m just not sure what I could do with tax skills outside public accounting.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance!

Can you tell me more about what you do?

I'm also in tax, but coming from a smaller firm, my work is evenly split between accounting and tax.

I'm curious what other tax people are doing in public accounting.

1120S, 1120, 1065, 1040, 1041, 990…haven't been doing much estate/gift tax stuff. Usually most of the work is related to fixed assets updating through BNA (acquisition/disposal) and a fixed asset reconciliation to what client has and AJEs related to GAAP and Tax adjustments. After we pin down adjusted book we do our M1/M3 adjustments. Nothing too crazy…

A tax team at a larger public client I've seen dealt with a number of issues going on: transactional tax issues between their domestic and foreign subsidiaries located domestically and overseas, as well as state incentives for their manufacturing plants and operations. They've been busy dealing with spin-offs of their own company, and recent mergers and acquisitions of other companies too.

    Couldn't pass again!
