Out of curiousity, I’d like to ask what most people find difficult about the journal entries on the FAR exam? Is it the calculation component of the sims or the actual choosing of the accounts to post to? I’m in corporate accounting so I prepare journal entries on a daily basis, but I want to make sure I focus on what most people seem to get stuck on and not overestimate my abilities and make another 74.

For the most part I didn't have a problem with either the amounts or the accounts. However, I had a SIM that required some pretty complicated JE with multiple accounts. I didn't have trouble with the money (I don't think), but I did have trouble figuring out all the accounts.

I think it's just the experience. You can know how to do something/calculate something that was in your CPA exam review course (such as Becker) but have no idea how to do the journal entries for it (I know that was the case for me)

Hi guys, I'm just wondering how crazy I should get about studying the journal entries. I have read that some people got several journal entry SIMs on their FAR exam. I have made flash cards for all the journal entries for Gov &Non Prof. since that section is 25% of the exam. Should I make flash cards for ALL other types of journal entries in other chapters? Example I'm reviewing the pensions chapter today (which I've heard is a hot topic) would it be wise of me to make flash cards for all of these journal entries since there is a great amount? Just curious at how insane I should get over the J/E. Any thoughts would be great 🙂

I probably wouldn't write J/E out for everything. You'll end up spending a lot of time writing and reviewing material that might not help that much. However, I do think that writing J/E for the more complicated topics (e.g. bonds, pensions, taxes) or those that you have some trouble with can be very helpful. I did this when I was preparing for FAR. I wasn't thinking so much of the SIMS as I was of getting these topics straight in my mind. This helped me on the MCQ because I didn't have to think things through so much and was able to answer questions faster.
