i’ve been at my firm for a few years now and i passed all of my exams and got licensed earlier this year. all i got was a one-time hand shake and congratulations from my boss. no raise, no bonus, no talk ever again about me being a cpa. is this normal? what did your firms do for you if anything after you finally passed your exams and got licensed?

My immediate boss, send me a one liner saying Congratulations on passing the cpa exam and he had CC'd his boss the corporate controller. That jackasss never ever acknowledged me or said anything. But the CFO of my company found out and he left me a lengthy voicemail. Our reviews happened this month , so i am waiting to see what they do with me, since i got licensed a month ago.

@givemesleep that would have been disrespectful to say right after i passed but maybe that's what my boss was thinking haha. i was just looking for a firm-wide congratulatory email or new business cards or the firm automatically signing me up and paying for state and AICPA memberships, a bill out rate increase, a little acknowledgement. however, they are paying for my cpe.

jtcali — I am like you. I got an one time handshake and congraduation from my boss (he is a CPA too). I did get many free lunches from coworkers and friends for passing the tests. :-). I didn't expect to get a raise or anything either, so it is okey to me since getting a CPA is just a personal thing to me…

I didn't get anything after passing/ getting licensed…I stuck around 1.5 months found anew job and put in my two weeks notice, then they counter offered with more money and a promotion which I declined…the sad thing is I would have taken it in a heartbeat they offered to me first

My firm, one of the big 4, offers $5000 for passing the exam and they even reimburse you for the money you spent on the cpa study material and exam fees. If you join without the cpa license (my case), they pay for your study material, give you paid days off to take the exam and if you pass it within one year of your start date, you get $5000 and within 2 years it goes down to $3000. After 3 years if you still do not have it, you'll probably get a kick in your behind (to be polite : )

It's just to let you know that you should consider moving to a bigger firm where your cpa license will be treated like gold : )

    Good luck

wow, nice FAR score! what happened? it looks like you had plenty of time to study — but ended up dropping FAR to study for REG and then just chose to take the FAR exam anyway for the experience?

I love my grade “24”, it got to be the lowest I've ever seen or heard of. I'm going to try getting into the Guinness Book of Record with that : )

On a serious note, I just took it because I hate wasting my money. I paid for and register for both exams in 1 NTS and got caught up preparing for my wedding that was scheduled to take place in a foreign country (outside the US). The stress of the wedding preparation quickly made me realize that I'll have to sacrifice one exam and try to focus on one. I chose to drop FAR because it's more time consuming than REG. FAR was scheduled for 7/3 and REG for 7/9. My travel was booked for 7/15 and my wedding for 7/23. Do you see the pattern here (lol). Since FAR was supposed to be my very first CPA exam and because I did not know how it feels like to be in the exam center, I decided to go and take FAR so that I can become more familiar with the process and come back 6 days after to take REG. I also didn’t want to let couple of hundred dollars vanish like sand (lol). I did not opened the FAR Becker book once until now. I sat down in front of that computer for FAR and all I could see is some type of graffiti or aliens’ unreadable scripts (that's how it feels when you're not prepared for a test/exam (lol)). I literally guessed every answer and here and there, I remembered some accounting concepts back from college and I picked the correct answers. I finished FAR in 30 minutes (another record (lol)).

The good thing is that after I retake FAR, I will probably beat another record of points difference between 1st and 2nd attempt of an exam.

Moral of my story: Do not register for 2 exams or more at once if you're not ready to take them all within 6 months.

Advice for candidates who are single: Marriage and CPA do not match very well, they might for you, but most of they just don’t : ) . Therefore, take your time, get CPA out of the way, and then get married so that you can share half of your hard-earned income with your spouse : )

    Good luck to all!!!

True story. I registered for all my exams at once and had to convince the people from NASBA to extend my NTS for REG…. 🙂
