Is studying during lunch antisocial?

I started a job in a new position within my company (I’ve been here for about 7 months total, and this is my second week in new job). I really like to study during lunch because I have a long commute and I find that I cannot get that much accomplished on weekday nights. But, I work with younger-ish people who often get lunch together. Do you think that studying during lunch will negatively impact me? I don’t want to be seen as someone who is antisocial/doesn’t care to get to know my coworkers. I was thinking that I would try to get lunch with them once or twice a week.

Great plan.. take advantage of that crucial down time to study. But going out with them maybe once a week shows you are not anti social, and gives you a chance to maybe get out and get some sun, or swap CPA exam tales. Those lunch hours have proved really valuable to me getting feedback from my co workers further along in the process than I am. However, do not feel any pressure to have lunch with them when you have made a schedule and a commitment to study or you will regret it. It is not their CPAship that will suffer, it is yours.

We're accountants, aren't we supposed to be antisocial? 😛 I studied at lunch almost everyday for 9 months. I'd say CPA is #1 priority and days you just really don't feel like studying go out to lunch.

I never eat lunch with my coworkers. They typically go to lunch about 11:50am, and I refuse to eat that early. I go get my lunch by myself an hour later every day. Hasn't effected anything so far and I've been doing this for a while.

You even have a more legit reason to not eat with coworkers – CPA = important.

I don't eat out with co-worker(s). And I always study during my lunch time. In fact, I gain lots of respect from co-workers and other employees from the company.

I work in a small office. They used to close the office during lunch, now I that I've been studying at lunch EVERYDAY they now are confident in telling clients there is always someone here at lunch 🙂 You are not alone. Keep up the good work and treat yourself to going out once in awhile, either with the co-workers or just by yourself.

I study almost everyday at lunch. Right now CPA is the top priority.

People at the office respect that I take lunch to study.

Where will these people be in 10 years when you have a CPA?

Once you get the CPA stay in from lunch and work – maybe you'll get promoted.

Like Gordon Gekko said – lunch is for wimps.

I study on my lunch hour a lot. It is usually the most productive time for me because it is quiet (I have two sons at home). But I also go out with my co workers on occasion, like once a month. They know I am studying for the exam and get why I stay in all the time.

You'll need to think of it as the big picture. I get the “you are young, you need to have more fun”..and the “you are wasting your youth studying”..(And I haven't even started the CPA yet, I'm just about to finish grad school!) ..so if your coworkers don't support you and respect you for wanting to accomplish your goals, it's better not to have lunch with them anyway 🙂

In the words of peter griffin…

“OMG, WHO THE HELL CARES” (what your co-workers think)

If your co-workers can't respect that you're trying to better yourself as an individual and as a professional, those are not co-workers I would want to be around anyway.

Do whatever you have to do to pass.

Thanks everyone. The reason why I asked mainly is because I didn't want to create a bad first impression. Since I work in internal audit, it is more of a “team” focus than other departments.

I don't know what I'm going to do with my lunch breaks once I am done with this awful quest. To not have it looming out there, and to have no self obligations every day for an hour… it's unfathomable. It's going to be heavenly!!!

I studied during lunch break everyday for 7 weeks straight for AUDIT….

It was great b/c it gave me more time to have a personal life at home

Don't worry so much about your co-workers and maybe eat with them once a week…

My friend used to go out to his car at lunch to study because co-workers wouldn't leave him alone in the cafeteria despite the fact that it was obvious he was studying.
