Is passing a part on the first try luck? - Page 3

Everyone in my office keeps telling me that eventually a test comes along which you will pass. There are a few people here who have been attempting tests for years and have passed some, or even all parts but too much time elapsed, and their best advice is simply “your test will come along.” On the other hand, we have people who pass all parts on the first try. Did these people simply get lucky (and I think they did since one of them received 75’s on two parts and a 76 on another)?

It can be very discouraging knowing you have studied and prepared but you get “unlucky” on test day.

    AUD-Failed (Waiting for Score)
    BEC-PASSED (First try)
    REG-Failed (Retake February 2013)
    FAR-Failed (Retake January 2013)

Thanks a lot Mini I almost spit my hot drink all over my computer while sitting here in Panera… oh how I need it though 😉

I think everyone here has hit it on the nail… study study study and you will pass..half ass it and think you'll pass anyways and you'll fail. Period. I thought I studied and knew the material for my AUD exam and went in and realized I did not study enough AT ALL…. so just study and you'll be fine! LOTS of MCQ's!

Walking in and scoring a 69 on AUD without studying (NTS expired that day) was luck.

not the best luck considering it was a 69 🙂 of course that is still one point more than mine and I actually “studied”!

@Jeff – Thats not luck. That is using some common sense, some deductive reasoning, some knowledge from prior accounting courses, and I'm sure a hint of real world experience. Not luck, my friend.

I think I can summarize this whole thread in one quote:

“The harder I work, the luckier I get.” – Samuel Goldwyn

    Enjoy.

Speaking of luck, anyone in a MegaMillions state? Jackpot is like $365 mil right now!

Just an observation that I've seen – but for every 1 person I see attributing their passing score to a little bit of good luck, I see about 50 attributing their failing score to bad luck. Kind of lopsided if you ask me…

Let's face it – we love to make excuses for ourselves when we let ourselves down. It's hard to accept the fact that we failed because of our own poor choices. Bad luck sounds like a nice scapegoat, but eventually we need to accept the fact that our choices (namely, the time and effort we spend preparing) determine our destiny.

Good luck! (and by that, I mean go study your brains out, people!)

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 88
    REG - 87
    FAR - 86 - Woot, all done!
    Ethics - 100

Even though I only passed one part on my first try, I still think that all 4 of my passes were due to luck. If I had to do it all over again, I don't think I'd be able to do it.

CPAMan, I can totally see how luck improved your AUD score by 40 points 😀

@tbstew- That's not true. I blame luck for both my failing and passing scores. Bad luck attributed to my failing scores and good luck attributed to my passing scores. Like I said, if I had to take all 4 parts again, I do not think I'd pass any of them again.

@75- I got a 47 on AUD because I was lost at the time. I had no idea what the material was about and no instructor out there was able to make me understand what the heck was going on. It wasn't until I bought the Yaeger course where I finally understood it. That's why I got the 40 point increase. BUT… on my exam, I had some real killer Sims. I was guessing my way through them. Many people that felt that way about the Sims failed in the low 70s. But me, I got an 87. I could've easily failed with a 70-74, but didn't. Like I said, it was luck that I got that 87.

@Mini – I bought my tickets this morning. What will I do if I win…give my notice at work & concentrate on passing the CPA exam.

When I say luck, I mean that I just happen to get questions that are my strong areas. And also, when I get questions I don't know or get stumped, I happen to pick the right answer by applying as much common sense as I can. And also I get lucky because the exam I'm taking is curved more during that quarter. I'm not talking about superstitious luck.

I do not believe in the lottery. That's a different kind of luck. That's more unrealistic. What are my chances of me guessing 6+ numbers correctly. Highly unlikely. I can play the lottery as much as I want. I will never win. Think of how many people play the lottery. BILLIONS and BILLIONS of people buy lottery tickets and we only get 1 winner every now and then. Your chances of winning the lottery are close to nothing.
