magic_8_ball,
As far as I know, in IL anyway… you cannot put CPA after your name until you receive a “license” from the ILDPR. IL is a 2-tier state, which means that they “offer” 2 types of “licenses”… one is Registered CPA, the other is a Licensed CPA,
You receive these “licenses” from the ILDPR. Both allow you to put CPA after your name, the difference comes in w/the experience requirement, the CPE reqs and the cost(s) of the licenses.
There is more info on the ILBOE (Board or Examiners) website, and also, I found the IL CPA Society to have a pretty good website that highlights the differences.
I sent in for both the reg and the licensed CPA because I am planning on moving in a year or two, and was told that it might be beneficial for me to do so. If you are a licensed CPA in IL you do do not need to have a registered CPA license.
I am STILL waiting from the ILDPR… since Dec 16th!
Hope this helps.
