During my studies for CPA, I really feel that I didn’t learn much from my professors. Didn’t they understand we all have to try to pass CPA when we graduate??? I didn’t learn much from AUD especially. If were a professor, I will use Wiley as testbook, and I will make sure my students to finish questions on each chapters and test them on the midterns and finals. I will assign MCQ and sim as homework after I finsih teaching each chapter. Then I will open to answer questions at the begining of next class to see if students have any questions from the home. I will try to explain the accounting concept to them instead try to fail them. Also, I will them to sign up Another71 to keep in touch after they graudate so they can study together to help each other out!

Not sure you would be able to use Wiley as a textbook, remember the school decides the book LOL. Trust me there is much that is dictated in terms of materials and I'm not convinced Wiley would license a book to a school.

That said I think its a very small percentage of acctg students who actually go through with the CPA so thats why it isn't a focal point in a university.

While it is true that many universities choose books for their professors….many professors can choose to supplement their course with additional materials. My Audit instructor told us not to buy the book from the bookstore and instead get the Wiley book from Amazon.

What is decided as textbooks in college depends on the kickbacks the school gets from the book publisher. You're not paying $200 for a book for nothing.

And the course content is dictated by what's in the textbook.

If you were an accounting professor, especially an not-even-minimum-wage adjunct, you pretty much don't have a choice, because the school forces you to use that book.

Now if I were a professor, I'd ask the students who is thinking of going for their CPA. Make a note of them. Then give them CPA tips, like coming to A71. Everyone else gets the usual course.

I would say that in the classes I just finished (M.S. Accounting and Finance) only 3 out of 20 of my peers said they were going for the CPA exam in the future.

Bob you couldn't be more right about the not even minimum wage for an adjunct. If I only knew what I was getting myself into. One stinkin class and its practically a full time job.

To the OP, these were my exact thoughts as I started studying. I was in the CPA track at my college, so why not use material which is directed at preparing for the CPA test?! Plus, I went to a private college so my professors were able to choose their own materials, in fact, several classes I didn't even have to purchase books.

If anything, as a professor I would use a review course to guide what I teach students and I would definitely be giving them CPA questions on exams. To me, the CPA type of question is not more difficult than other questions, its just we have not been exposed to them. I know if I would have seen more questions like this throughout college I would be much more prepared for the actual exams.

My audit class did use the Wiley book (in addition to a more traditional book) and our tests were based off of the exam except shorter. I took Aud first for that reason.

    AUD - 97
    BEC - 85
    FAR - 90
REG - sometime after tax season!

Wiley actually publishes a lot of the accounting textbooks. I think almost all of the books we used were published by them.
