Hello everyone, in reading Nebraska’s CPA requirements, i realized i need to have 4000 hours (2 yrs) experience working under CPA in a registered PUBLIC accounting firm! I currently work as an imtenal auditor in a public company, and my boss is an active CPA, so i was under the understanding that i was already buildig that experience requirement, guess i was wrong :/

Does every state have the same requirement? And do i have to apply in the jurisdiction of the state i live in? Or can i apply for another state? Thanks!

Hey Jenuno! So most states do not have a residency requirement, meaning you could apply under pretty much any other state. All of the states have different experience requirements. For example, I'm registered under NY, and under NY you only need 1 year of experience under ANY CPA, doesn't have to be public or private. I would browse NASBA.org for other states to register under.

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

Check VA, is one year accounting experience, no need to be under CPA nor public accounting. I sent an email and got a confirmation of the facts on their website, you can call Modany morning, they are very helpful.

    Done 😉

@Peanut & @Marivy thanks for the suggestions! Soo glad to hear that there are no residency requirements! Since I've only passed one exam so far, should I wait to make the change or make it now? Or does it matter? I am not really concerned in practicing as a CPA (at least not anytime soon), I just want to be able to call myself a CPA when I pass and to put it on my email signature at work LOL

    @Jenuno

I changed states after I passed all four sections, I guess it shouldn't really matter whether you do it now or later. However, if you do plan on representing that you are a CPA and putting it in your email signature you should definitely look up the accounting laws in the state that you are physically in regarding representing that you are a CPA. Originally, I was licensed in a state other than the one I was physically in and the laws of the state in which I was physically in stated that it was illegal to represent that you are a CPA (including putting CPA after your name, saying you are a CPA, etc) unless you are licensed by that state. So while I was a licensed CPA in another state, I never wrote CPA after my name. So if you get licensed in a state other than Nebraska you should look carefully at the laws in the state of Nebraska about representing that you are a CPA so that you don't get yourself in any trouble.

    Jenuno,

I think that a general rule, you cannot use the CPA title unless you are licensed on the state.

@PhDCPA & @Marivy great info!! I hate how many loop holes there are in regards to being a CPA… isn't passing these insanley hard tests enough torture? I will look into VA since it sounds very reasonable…once I pass all parts, it will definitely be strange to say that I am a CPA working in Nebraska but only licensed in VA LOL

Check out the education requirements, as a lot of states are 150, but a few are still 120.

Also check out the licensing fees, as the requirements might be more lenient in VA, but these types of fees generate revenue for the state gov't.

And see if Nebraska and Virginia have a licensing reciprocation agreement of some sort, so that you could just port your license over from another state.

    Couldn't pass again!

    Marivy22,

Thanks for the info. I am in SC, passed the CPA and AICPA Ethics but I have worked 6 years under a SC licensed Accounting Practitioner (not a CPA). SC will not recognize my experience to get licensed as a CPA here.

I've been in touch with CO and CA state boards. CO requires the experience to be under a CPA as well. CA will accept my experience but the CA Ethics exam and application were going to cost around $500. I contacted VA today and they would consider my experience. The initial application fee was $24. They also require only 120 hours, if I read the info correctly. I have 150. They require the AICPA Ethics, which I've done.

I know I can't call myself a CPA in SC until I jump through their hoops, but it would be nice to be an official CPA somewhere in the meantime.

@jenuno01 — hey! i'm from nebraska too….if you couldn't tell 🙂 before you try to apply through another state just check with your boss about the cpa experience requirement. i know a couple of people working in the private sector who are still going through nebraska despite the requirement of public/government accounting experience only. i'm not exactly sure how they're managing to get around it, but i know it's possible.

    REG (08/2011) - 73 (2/2012) - 72
    AUD (08/2011) - 73 (1/2012) - 86
    FAR (11/2011) - 79
    BEC (11/2011) - 79

@nebraska! Hi! I did notice you're from NE haha!

Thanks for the advice, I should probably focus on getting through these exams! I may not even pass for all I know lol jk…I'll pass eventually. I looked into IA since I live like right next to IA, & SD, their requirements are much more lenient!
