I work best in a classroom learning environment with a teacher, fellow students, weekly schedule, etc.

Although I consider myself an extremely disciplined person, this self-study stuff isn’t cutting it.

It’s taking me forever to get through the material. I’m literally having to learn the info. This process is more than just a “review” for me.

Any thoughts? What can I do to get through? At this pace, even if I pass the first exam, I’ll never make the 18 month window for the other 3. I’m at the point of just reading the info. It doesn’t sink into my brain anymore. Even if I take a break for a couple days, when I come back, it’s no better.

I’m really concerned about this, guys.

    Please brainstorm with me.

Why aren’t there CPA teacher programs out there, and/or CPA in-person coaches or something?

I used to be pretty unmotivated when it comes to self-study, but I have tried a few things that have generally been effective for me.

    1) I never study where I live. When you're at home, you're distracted by pets, family, TV, chores, etc. Plus you tend to get too comfortable to feel motivated. I try and study in libraries whenever possible. In libraries, you're not as comfortable, so it motivates you to keep studying, so you can call it a night and go home. Also, when you're around a bunch of other people who are studying, I've found it motivates you to do it as well.

    2) Study in groups. I don't do this much for the CPA exam (mainly because I can't find anyone to join me at the library) but I did it all the time in college. We'd find an empty classroom, set up camp there, bring snacks. It made studying a lot less painless.

I had this exact same problem the last time I was studying. This time, I got Becker online, and it helped *so much* with keeping me on track. It has assignments and due dates and stuff. Yeah, it's not in person, but what I needed more than the people was the schedule. I have yet to see what it will do to my score, since I take my first post-Becker test in July, but in terms of actually getting me to study, and study a lot, becker online helped immensely.

Tux, I am with you on the self-decipline issue. I never thought in million years that I would keep studying for 11 months. Actually once you fell into routine it is not as bad as you think. You will also be amazed by yourself how far you would go on this CPA journey. The one thing really helps me to jump start is Becker live class. Either it's helpful or not, it helps me decipline myself and forces me th sit in that classroom for painful 8 hours. No way I could do it myself. That also keep my study schedule in check in order to keep up with the lecture. Once you taste your first success you will go on. It is like climbing the mountain, once you climb to a certain heigh, there won't be turn back…lol.

I never bothered to read the becker book word for word, it's just too much stuff and not 100% necessary. I'd read some of the main parts or if I was working MCQ and got stumped on a problem, I'd refer back to the book and read certain sections.
