Just curious to know, especially to those who have passed the sections their first try, were you a good student at school particularly in your Accounting courses? I ask this because I’ve had really good grades when I took the required Accounting courses, but feel that I did not learn “enough”. I’ve come to realize this when I started my CPA review and it’s like I’m learning new things each time I read my Becker materials.

mia1169, I grew up with parents who spoke minimum English. I remember speaking Tagalog (a Filipino dialect) when I was in elementary school. I struggled with the reading material and word problems in math: It was difficult to understand because everything was written in English. After my parents realized we needed to learn the English language (because of school and because my siblings and I got bullied for being “different”) we were no longer allowed to speak Tagalog. This forced me to learn English, but I was never really good at it. Part of the reason is I grew up in a very multicultural environment where the natives and community members spoke “broken English”. When I met my husband he made fun of me and often corrected my grammar (he's white). This used to make me mad but it also encouraged me to improve my grammar. However, I still make a lot of mistakes, especially grammatical ones. My husband still corrects me at times.

Kricket, like you, I have to re-read some parts of the material, sometimes 3 or 4 times. I also have a tendency to over analyze.

@ Maverick — Glad to know I'm not the only Filipina in this forum! 🙂

So this is probably totally inappropriate, but have you noticed that Philipino women really like white guys? I went to a predominantly Asian college (most of the UC schools are now) and started noticing this then. I think it's even picked up some steam since. I'm assuming those of you in rural parts of the country have no idea what I'm talking about.

@AnnaMay84 — Well I'm glad you found some of the crap I spit out useful…I can get pretty long-winded on these forums. Oh one thing that I did not know until my last section (lol!), during the simulations, you can use the research tab to look up rules/codification for any of the simulations! I know, I'm a moron…but for the first three exams, I thought the research function was only for the research question! So learn from my idiocy and use the resources you are given! haha

2.8 gpa in college, averaged B-/C+ on accounting classes. College accounting classes teach you the fundamentals and many professors at my school will skip over the hard sections because they don't even know it that well themselves.

I want to say about 60% of the material on the CPA exam I at least heard of before while in school, but I had no clue how to work the problems. If each section of the material covered on the cpa could be summarized on one page, I would know about 1-3 sentences at most (prior to studying for the exam). Most of the accounting knowledge I learned at one point while I was taking the exam was through the review courses.

It's funny how quickly you forget things once you pass.. I use to know non-monetary exchange and today I can't even explain it to someone else.. The sad part is it's only been 3 weeks since I took FAR! ahha life is awesome once you pass.. forget everything except what you need to know for work.

AnnaMay84, Kumasta. Glad you started this thread. I wondered how studious and intelligent cpa candidates are. The information helps me asses my capability.

Minimorty, Filipino women REALLY like white guys? Hahahaha! Maybe it's the other way around…maybe it's because we are minorities and live in a country predominantly white…maybe you are correct. 😉 White men have their good qualities, Asian men have their good qualities, Black men have their good qualities, Mexicans have their good qualities. etc…but all these groups also have not so good qualities.

    4.17/4.0 – High School

3.80/4.0 – College (solid, albeit relatively unknown, private university)

    BEC- 91

    FAR- 89

    REG- 81

    AUD- 97

The two intro-accounting courses that all business majors have to take were actually two of the harder classes for me in college. I really didn't know anything about accounting until I retook the intro courses at community college. I rocked all the law courses and conceptual business courses in college (ie, game theory economics, leadership, managerial decision making, etc..), but didn't put forth quite enough effort in the accounting area. Once I started taking accounting courses as a means of effecting a career change, all of that changed. The only ‘B' I received was in Intermediate I, and it was only by a relatively small percentage. It's funny how much harder you try when you have the wherewithal to realize how much a set of courses will impact your future! That's an abstract concept that I may not have fully grasped while in college. Also, the proximity of the accounting courses I took, relative to when I sat for the exam had a HUGE impact on my scores (in a positive way).

3.5/4.0-HS….I had a 4.0, but I became lazy and hated school and basically everyone during my Junior and Senior year. I seriously thought school was pointless and a waste of time. Basically all they were teaching me I had already learned in my home country, so I was wondering if this HS was for Special Ed people….

3.93/4.0-College…I was working 32 hours/wk at Wal-Mart (which I loved and did pay me well) while in college. I learned how to study effectively and efficiently while in college.

4.0/4.0-Macc-which is still a WIP..suspended due to lack of funds..Will continue in the Fall…

The hardest class I took -SPEECH…I got a B+. I just hate talking in front of people :-/…..I've always liked to study and learn new things. People/friends/Professors/girls/my pets think I'm a nerd, but who gives a crap………..
