Any advice on how to get the research questions right? I took both FAR and AUD and I always figured that the research questions were easy points. However, now I’m studying for REG and I can’t seem to find the correct source via the link on any of the task based questions I have tried. I’m using Gleim, but am sure that it is probably the same for all programs.

Any tips on how to find the correct answer? I’m using the search bar, but it always turns up a bunch of irrelevant stuff if I am too general and won’t turn up anything if I am too specific.

It is all about practice. Familiarize yourself with how to navigate the code. I always felt that when I started to use the search function, it was the last resort and typically I wouldn't even find what I needed.

Thanks. I guess that is what I Will have to do, just learn the code sections. I got used to just searching for the answers on the last exams.

The problem with Research Questions is that you have no clue what they're going to ask and you obviously can't memorize the entire code. I spent like half an hour on my REG research question because I couldn't find it to save my life (ended up finding it by the end of the testlet). I think the best thing you can do is keep practicing just to get a familiarity with what topics can be found where, and then pray you get a question you can easily navigate to on the day of.

You can use the AICPA practice exam to really see how it's going to look on the actual exam.

Yep Ditto- use the AICPA practice exam to access the research database. I just took FAR earlier this month and it really helped me a lot. Familiarize yourself with the code section. Also, the keyword search can help you. When I was practicing, I noticed I'd land near-but not exactly- where I needed to go. However, the results are all hyper linked and sometimes you'll get lucky with a “for more info about X topic see (link)” and that'll take you where you need to go.

@Dayton, I just started studying, but I've seen a lot of people say they were hit hard with Governmental on their exams recently, so I plan to make sure I know the ins and outs of that topic.

I'll go with the common answer and say practice. Quick story: I passed my FAR Research and I know i missed the REG research for one reason and one reason only: I didn't study how to find language without using the search bar.

I specifically searched for a term (or a few words) that did not exist in the same section. Ate up over 20 minutes of my time from other sims. Do yourself a favor and practice it just like you would any other sim. Understanding general concepts and where to find will help.

i think a good chunk of it has to do with luck to be honest, but practicing helps a LOT. i use roger, and they have links to the various code groupings, but most of them you can't search on. you can sign up through NASBA i think for a 6 month literature review that includes them as well, where you can search. but i always found their search function to be pretty crappy, but quite good on the exam. so the way i went about it, i wouldn't use the search function when i practiced the questions, which would be infuriating at times, but gave me a really good handle on the various literature. for REG i found the section quickly, but took around 8-9 minutes debating between 2 sections that both kind of answered the question. i found the FAR one in about 2 minutes.

the other thing is when searching, try to identify some unique terms in the question, or infer it from the question. if they are asking about an underlying concept, if you search that concept by name, it narrows it down a lot. you often know you've found it as well if they question says something like “what are a list of itemized deductions that can be used” or something like that, and in the literature you find “the following is a list of itemized deductions that can be used”. they usually keep the terminology the same, or so i found. this is anecdotal for sure but it's what i found anyway.
