How does the whole "pretest" questions thing work?

Sorry, I’m new to the whole CPA thing and I’m unsure what people are referring to about “pretest” questions. Thanks

A certain portion of your multiple choice questions are “pre-test”(used by the examiners for statistical purposes) and do not count toward your score. You never know which ones are and aren't though.
