Hi Everyone! I started studying for FAR about 2 weeks ago (20-25 hours a week) and just got to the middle of Chapter 2 in Becker. I also use Wiley Test Bank, Ninja Notes, and Ninja Audio while driving to and from work. I was thinking about taking FAR at the end of February but now realizing that it will take longer…Either I'm a dummy or 2-3 hours of studying in the evenings after work are not very productive…

I would a agree with an 8-9 week timeline (if you're working full-time). FAR was the only section I had to retake and I think it was largely due to the fact that I stretched it out too long (about 2.5 months) and realized that I had forgotten a lot of the material when I went to review. If you do 1.5 sections per week that should take a little less than 7 weeks. That gives you about 2-2.5 weeks for pure review. I also don't know if tax season is an issue for you, but for me it was nearly impossible to study during that time due to the heavy workload so I got an exam in right before busy season (early February) and didn't pick up again until May.

    REG - 86
    FAR - 80
    BEC - 79
    AUD - 92...I'm done woohoo!

I don't know if I am a dummy as well but I never understood that over studying concept. FAR has a lot of material and depending on what a persons background is they need more time. I haven't done a journal entry for close to seven years before studying for FAR. So I felt that my first 100 to 150 hours was a refresh of my accounting education. Now if you are a senior accountant somewhere you probably don't need anymore than 150 hours.

If you are going to study for FAR over a few months here are a few things I have learned in the last two months that I wish I knew back then:

Do not learn a chapter and then wait until your Review to get back to it. FAR is so big that every chapter you learn needs to be constantly reviewed so you can hold on to that precious information.

Do all of the related questions for a chapter before moving on. This seems like common sense, but I took a master the concepts before questions approach and now I realize that some of the things that I thought I understood are in fact more complex when given in CPA question format.

Do complex computational problems regularly by either printing them out or marking them in your CPA program.

Do not take a week off in the middle of your study period. Taking one week off was like losing two weeks because it took me at least one week to get to the competency I was at before.

This is advice coming from a person who has not passed an exam but who has learned a lot by studying ineffectively.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Good luck on the start of your CPA journey!

I did FAR in about 10-11 weeks. I thought for me it was just about the right amount of time (if I had to reduce it down to 9, I would have been OK, but for me, 8 would have been far too little… pun intended).

It was my first exam after a 5 year hiatus from CPA Exam world, so I had to spend time figuring out what study techniques would work for me. I work full time and spent 20 hours a week studying for it.

    F- 7/13- 84
    R- 10/13- 79
    A- 11/13- 99
    B- 1/14- 86

    Licensed in PA- 3/20/2014

This exam ALMOST defeated me back in 2006-2008, but I came back and WON!
