I have just gotten to Governmental accounting in my exam review and this is the first section where I have had 0 exposure to up to this point. Just got through the lecture and I feel like 80% of it went right through me.

What did you guys do to learn or understand it better? The example questions don’t seem too bad, but like I said a lecture where they skim the material is no where near enough for me to learn it.

    Tips/tricks?

I did all the MCQ, took notes (even if I didn't understand what they meant) and then reread chapter.

It sinks in on the second time. I also reread it for a third time for review and now it makes a lot of sense.

Just make sure you practice the J/Es!

    AUD- 97 1x
    REG- 81 1x
    BEC- 79 1x
    FAR- 88 1x

    DONE!

    10/1/12 to 2/28/14

Go through all of the material multiple times. Come up with handy acronyms to remember the types of funds. Do all the MCQ at least twice. Know the different types of financial statements, what type of items are on each, AND what kind of accounting the fund/financial statement uses (accrual or modified accural). The upside is there are no sims for gov't accounting (at least not in the Wiley book).

Thanks for the suggestions! You are correct, there aren't any SIMs in Becker either. I'm assuming that means there will be zero governmental related SIMs on any CPA exam because of this?

I looked in my old advanced accounting book. I thought Becker was terrible for outlining the material that is relevant to answering the questions.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Please don't assume there aren't any gov't/NFP sims on FAR. A number of us that have taken the exam have had them recently.

FAR - 73, rematch in early April
    AUD - 5/14
    REG - 8/14
    BEC - 11/14

I recommend writing out the JE's in the Becker book for each of the funds. Also know what the differences for each of the funds (ie would bond proceeds that are only gonna be spent on roads construction be accounted for in the debt service fund or capital project fund?). Also don't forget reporting requirements for each fund and how the roll up in to the gov wide fs.

It just takes time to absorb it all. Made me wish I had taken it in college instead of some easy mgt elective.

I had a Governmental sim on my exam, had zero clue as to how to answer it and still managed to pass. I'd recommend not spending more time on governmental if you've already gone over it once (gone through text and answered MCQs). It'd be wise to use your time mastering other parts that weigh more heavily on the exam. If I remember correctly, Governmental makes up something like 10% of the exam. If time isn't an issue, then I'd spend more time answering MCQs.
