    Hey everybody,

I just started studying for the FAR section of the CPA exam 2 weeks ago and was wondering if you have NOT taken a governmental accounting class in school, how hard would it be? At the moment via my University’s extension center, I am taking a governmental accounting class (to fulfill units for the exam. I still need 2 more Accounting courses….grrr) but an advanced financial accounting class is also open via concurrent enrollment…and I was thinking of taking that instead.

    Any suggestions?

Lastly, has anyone had any experiences with extension school or continuing educational classes? Does it matter if you take a class from say UCR or UCR extension?

You'll be ok – just work your review course and do a lot of MCQs

Go here and you'll get my Governmental Accounting NINJA Notes free:

I concur with Jeff… I had no exposure whatsoever to governmental accounting, and found it to be one of the easier sections of FAR. It's mostly memorization with very few calculations, but there is a lot of information that you need to sort out and understand in detail.

I did not take any Gov/NFP classes in college.

I actually found F8 to be easy and most of F9 too, except for a couple of NFP items.

According to the released CSO Gov't and NFP combined is about 16%-24% of the exam so you definately want to know it well but don't get too hung up on it. If you know the basic structure REALLY well and you'll be able to wing it. You don't have to take a class because I don't really see it adding much value. The material in FAR is a mile wide but only a few inches deep. You likely won't see anything on the exam that wasn't covered in your review course.

I find nonprofit to be more challenging than the governmental stuff.

Governmental I find to be the easiest of all the sections.
