Governmental Accounting

Holy cow. The MCQ’s in Becker F8 in regards to governmental accounting were all fairly easily. I scored 70-85% on all the MCQ’s.

But then, I get to the end of the Supplemental Questions of that chapter in which there are 10-20 MCQ’s based on the same fact pattern and all I can say is WTF. They have their own I/S, B/S, and CF statements. How does one learn all this just for a potential 20% of the test?

If the answers are in MCQ format on the exam, I think I can handle it. But if there is a governmental sim, I’d be totally screwed. Has anyone ever come across a governmental simulation on FAR?

I like studying for governmental, because I'm a visual learner.. I put everything in tables.. definitely helps me!

Becker also has a chart on page B8-73, but I don't care for it.. so I made my own.

    FAR 73 78
    BEC 73 82
    AUD 65 83

I'm not sure I would consider 70-85% as “easy”, but regardless, Yes you will see governmental on the exam. Read over the sims that Becker has in the lecture book (just to get an idea of what you may see). Again, focus on the materials and then use the practice sims as an application of your knowledge. Go through the basic topics in govt/NFP and you should be just fine.

You may not get a sim, but honestly they aren't too different than the knowledge tested in MC's, just a bit more detailed.

    BEC 86 (08/30/11)
    FAR 84 (10/13/11)
    REG 88 (11/08/11)
    AUD 86 (11/29/11)

Okay, the questions in particular I'm referring to is around MCQ questions 60-142 in the supplemental area of F8.

I feel like the contents of F8 did not prepare me well at all for those types of questions, where you have to pick and choose the associated numbers from the fact pattern to derive at a calculation

@shutterbug thanks for the chart, it definitely helps. i don't have any problems with “memorization” types of questions e.g. what type of statement are associated with each of the 3 categories, what type of fund do property taxes go to, etc.

have you gone through the second half of the supplemental questions though? they are totally off the wall! i don't even recognize some of the terms (what the heck does a capital outlay mean?).

sigh..i think i'm just overwhelmed. i tried to get some studying done today to wrap up my first review of FAR, but i hit a wall when it came to the supplemental questions and just ended up coming home and now watching a movie a de-stressing before i go back to a full work week tomorrow..

at least i plan on taking FAR towards the end of january (hopefully if i can find a seat — i haven't even registered for my NTS yet!), so i should have plenty of time to go back through the mcq's and compile my notes, and then do all the MCQ's again.

@cpagirl21 YES, please offer feedback! The questions I'm referring to in the Supplemental area start at about quesiton #60 — you'll know what I'm talking about because the question size go from 1-3 sentences to all of a sudden an entire page filled with fact patterns, and there's about 15-20 MCQ's using the same fact pattern.

Please give me your input on your thoughts. I'm totally lost (even went home early today from Starbucks because I was getting discouraged) and need to feel that I'm not alone 😛

You can ignore those crappy questions. Questions in govt accounting on exam would be straight forward.

    REG - 07/01/2011 - 93
    AUD - 08/25/2011 - 95
    FAR - 10/29/2011 - 94
    BEC - 11/28/2011 - 90

@smuppane thanks! I think I will skip those sim-type MCQ's and just move on to the second part of gov't accounting in F9. I feel fairly comfortable with gov't accounting, based on the results of the other MCQ's.
