I’m taking my last part of the exam (FAR) on Monday, November 22. The firm I work for will give us a $1,000 bonus when we pass the exam. We’ve already decided to take a part of it and treat myself to a Digital SLR Camera.

But right now, as I try to memorize the formula for Net Periodic Pension Cost and contemplate gouging my eyes out, my wife is running around with a sick two-year-old trying to keep things quiet enough for me to get something done. She has been truly amazing during this year long adventure and if I pass she deserves as much credit as I do. That’s why I want to use some of the bonus to get her something as well. I have to admit, that I’m pretty ashamed that I’m just now thinking of this.

So has anyone here given their “significant other” an appreciation gift for all the help during your studies? What have you given? How did he/she react?

I need to.. they definitely deserve it.. I owe mine a vacation, because I avoided vacation this year.. and he is an international traveler.. so he missed his international trip this year.. how do I pay him back for that?? Also, he's been doing all of the cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, walks without me, yard work without me, family outings without me.. I don't know how he did it all. We owe the significant others big time!

We are very lucky! I'm interested to hear the responses that follow..

Speaking as a woman, I think anything spa related = relaxation = wonderful. A manicure, pedicure, massage, facial or even a day package. OMG!! A day without worries and knowing my child is safe and my husband cared enough to know I needed some time to unwind is priceless. Top it off with a dinner with just the two of us and BAM!

Gosh, I feel like I am writing porn.

I'm actually happy when my husband does a load of laundry.

Just let her know you appreciate it and the pain (the CPA exam) is temporary.

I think you should do something together.. because she has missed out on spending time with you.. so YOU should go to the spa too! Couple's massages are nice! You deserve it too.. I'm going to do this after my exam!

I think it is important that because it is something you've done together, whatever you decide on involves the both of you. No spa for just her, no camera for just her… Both go for a massage, both go on a vacation (or weekend get away). Do something that involves re-connecting with each other.

Of course I am single, and therefore will be doing this solo. 🙂

Forget the SLR. After your bonus is taxed, you can't get a GOOD SLR anyway. I agree on the weekend getaway.
