General advice for FAR – what would YOU suggest?

    Howdy ya’ll,

Just thought I’d put this out to the community– which is great, by the way– to see what other folks thought.

This will be my first attempt at FAR and 2nd exam total. I found out I passed AUD a few weeks ago (yay) and there were some major topics that had I known going in, would have paid more attention to. Things like hey fella, make damn sure you understand the audit risk model and how control risk affects DR and have a good understanding of the ind. auditor’s report, etc.

I’m hoping for some general advice, something that you wish you knew before you sat for this section… I’ll be using 2011 Becker and am considering purchasing Ninja notes as well depending on how it goes. I have 3 months to study (1 section per week) with a few weeks left for review.

Anything that you wish you knew prior to taking it? Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to not blow off anything in the review materials. I used Becker 2012 and thought it did a very good job in preparing me.

    Thanks for the replies.

@CPAgirl – it appears that the IFRS info is presented as ancillary information at the end of most sections, do you feel Becker goes into sufficient detail to prepare for the exam?

My advise is to do each section and make sure you understand it before you move on to the next chapter. Weekly review of old material (just reading note cards, etc is good enough). While you drive or if you're at work, listen to the lectures. The more you listen, the better you will understand the material. Know your government/non-profit section. It's always heavily tested and it's actually one of the easier chapters to understand.

@Kodiak: you should definitely be in good shape if you just review the US GAAP/IFRS differences that Becker lists.

    Great thanks.

I've seen a few people mention that they watch ALL the lectures first before jumping into any MCQs. I don't see how that could be more effective than moving through each topic one at a time to ensure you really understand the concepts before moving on. With the amount of material covered in this section I couldn't imagine trying to soak all that in consecutively. Different strokes, I guess.
