For the Public Accounting folks – How did you adjust to busy season?

I start full time in August and I am going to be on a Mutual Fund client who has waves of busy seasons. The team is awesome and I love working with them, the work is meh. The busy waves are:

Jan – March = Extremely Busy

April – July = Dead (the guys barely worked fridays, left at like 3:30 to play basketball and took 1-2 hour lunches)

    August – October = Not bad/Medium

Nov – Dec = Medium Busy

Anyway, how did you all adjust to working long days and 6-7x a week? I currently work part time doing taxes and go to grad school 4x a week at night — so my schedule is up at 7AM and home in bed at 11PM. I’m not sure if this will be comparable to anything I will see in public but I just wanted to hear some thoughts.

Ive heard plenty of people saying its miserable and awful, but then I see so many people who stay in public for so long and dont seem phased by it. They are just ready to go when busy season comes around.

Watch your diet! The long hours and the firm bringing in dinner and lunch added me some 20 lbs my first year! It's tough at first, but late hours becomes second nature before you know it. Every firm is different, good luck!

@ littlenumberrobot thank you! I am a gymaholic so eating right and working out keeps me going. It will be tough but I think 5-6am gym sessions will become a new routine for me..

I used to workout 5 times a week, now I work out on the weekend only. I wake up and lay there. https://howshouldweaccountforme.tumblr.com/post/42189277758/every-morning-in-busy-season

We just put in wood floors throughout our house so everything is all disorganized. Once I set up the guest room, I'm going to try to hit the elliptical for 20 mins in the morning. I'll lift on weekends at the real gym. My mentality for busy season is to maintain or only lose like 5-10 pounds on my lifts haha

I just started and am doing Investment Management clients also! I was fine adjusting to it

@Da Bears Hahahaha I'd take only a 10lb loss over a busy season.

I was thinking getting up at 5/6 wouldnt be too bad but I never factored in getting to sleep only 5-6 hours a night which is pretty brutal. sigh…

I make no mental preparations in hopes of a 2 month out of body experience; where I'll watch this poor bastard slave away for pocket change.

I actually like busy season – I love doing taxes. (nobody shoot me) But then I work for a small firm and I'll average around 55/60 hours – which I know is not even close to the hours at a big firm. The only part I really hate is having to give up exercising – just no way to fit it when also dealing with the exam and two kids. I'm hoping to still take REG in Feb. – probably wishful thinking.

CPA Driven, we have the same life except I have 3 kids.

Busy season is what it is. I dread it every December, but once I get into it I love it. There is sort of a high that goes along with tax season. I'm always amazed at how much we can accomplish in such a short period of time. I don't think there is any way to prepare yourself, you just have to dive right in.

I leave home when it's dark. I get home when it's dark.

@primgirl nice to meet another tax freak. 🙂 I'm so jealous you only have one more exam to go. Good luck!
