The NTS reads “FAR” so that is what I am going to call it. You say Muhammad Ali, I say Cassius Clay..LOL.
September 14, 2010 at 5:55 pm #249401jllockeParticipantHi Everyone,
This is my first post!
I was happy to see this thread as I too took FAR on 8/31. I am very nervously awaiting the results :-/ I was feeling really bad about it because I ran out of time during the last simulation. I only finished the written and research tabs on the last sim and the clock ran out!
I had 1.5 hours left when I hit the first sim and thought I was in good shape. The first sim ended up taking me and hour and I was left with a mere 30 min for the second. I chose to complete the written first because I feel I do better in that area, after that I had 7 minutes! I did the research tab and was just beginning to read the other tabs to see if there were any quick fill ins and the time box popped up. Does anyone know if this was a good strategy? If you can only complete one or two tabs should you go for the written, research, or other tabs?

The written communications are worth a lot so it was smart of you to tackle the WC first and leave the other stuff blank. The research tabs aren't worth that much…so I would say order of importance is: 1.) written communication 2.) other tabs 3.) research tab.
A lot of people on this forum have posted that they left a lot of their SIMs for whatever reasons and still passed…how did you feel about the MCQs?

Agree with your and MPoni123. The 2 sims are worth 20 pts and the written communication is worth 10. The number of data input per sim is high. The WC takes less time and gives you the possibility of more points for your effort. The research tab is likely not worth a lot – but just a few minutes may not have made a big difference in your score.
Many people have posted that they left a lot of a sim blank and passed with very good scores.
Good luck!
September 14, 2010 at 6:23 pm #249404jllockeParticipantHi MPoni123,
Well, I felt pretty good about the MCQ. I feel like the questions definitely were becoming more difficult as I worked through the testlets. So I have heard that is a good sign! Fingers and toes crossed!
As for my background: I'm from NH and I have been working on these exams for quite a while now! Basically, becoming a CPA was something that never crossed my mind until I began my current job. My job basically requires the CPA if I am to be promoted any higher. So….. I began in 2008, took AUD got a 69, took BEC got a 67. I guess you could say I was very lackadaisical about the whole thing and I took a break for a bit. I got back on the horse in 2009, took AUD got a 72, then took BEC and got a 69. Although the scores were an improvement, I was completely discouraged and began thinking maybe this profession was not for me. So after some serious soul searching and a kick in the butt, I started again this year. I took FAR on May 31st and got a 58. I honestly did not put enough time in. Work was crazy, excuses, excuses, but ultimately I just didn't study enough. SO, I worked my butt off and studied harder than I ever have and took FAR again on 8/31……. that is where I am. Waiting anxiously! I have since started studying for REG which I have scheduled for 11/1. I would love to have gotten FAR behind me, take REG on 11/1 and take either BEC or AUD in the end of November to get three out of the way before 2010 is over. But this all depends on that FAR score………..

REG-68 Retake (01/14/11)September 14, 2010 at 6:30 pm #249405TrevorParticipantI also agree, this is in fact what I did on my second simulation. I might have gotten a little further, but not too much. I had a little under 1.5hrs for my sims – feel like I did well on the first but took a while. I think I had about 35 minutes left for my second, I went through the tabs quickly knowing that I was going to have to do the WC first (wanted to see what the SIM was on and have it in mind when I hit the research tab). I finished my WC with about 20 minutes left (guess) and then went to my research. I also do no think it is worth many points, but I had little clue of what to do for the SIM. I figured I would rather have some easy points over none… Then I hit the other tabs, as I was rushing I might have gotten about 40% done then just filed in some guesses so I did not leave anything blank… Not real sure how I did on the MCQ's though – writing about it gives me knots in my stomach lol. I feel like I might have come close, but not passed. Only time will tell – I know if I have to take it again that I will definitely pass it!!
BEC: 73,81(7/6/2010); AUD: 75(5/24/2010); FAR: 76(8/31/2010); REG: 77 (10/18/2010) - DONE!!!!
September 14, 2010 at 6:30 pm #249406MPoni123Participantjllocke – trust me…we can all relate to your story!!! I have been at this for the last year and a half and finally have 3 exams done…and waiting on my FAR score. What study materials are you using?
I thought Becker was good for AUD, but Yaeger is by far the best for BEC. (I struggled with BEC and finally passed it on my 3rd try using Yaeger Homestudy). You might want to consider switching up your study materials because it made the world of difference to me for BEC.

September 14, 2010 at 6:41 pm #249407jllockeParticipantMPoni123, cpa journey and Trevor-
I am really glad the consensus seems to be completing the WC was the best way to go with the time constraint. Trevor- I think I was in your same mindset to get the easy points with the research tab instead of none because the rest of the SIM had my eyes completely crossed! I think I was completely exhausted by the time I hit that last SIM. The first SIM was super hard.

I began by using the Bisk online course for the first two (AUD and BEC), then I used Becker for the next two (AUD and BEC) and I have since returned to Bisk, but instead of the online I have been doing the at home study in addition to listening to the Bisk audio CDs on my 2 hour each way commute to work. Unfortunately I've got plenty of car time for listening. The audio CDs do seem to help with reinforcing the material though so I guess the commute is a +/- situation. I've been thinking about the Yaeger or the Gleim since reading so many posts about them… I am open to anything that will help me get through this!

September 14, 2010 at 7:33 pm #249409Sdb2fsuParticipantQuick question peeps lol!!! I am currently using Gleim to study for FAR; but I was thinking of purchasing the focus notes from Wiley for something different to look at…have any of you used these? Is it worth the $40?

I got the focus notes and I don't think they are worth the $40. I thought they would be like little note cards in a binder I could carry around with me and pull out to study whenever I had a few minutes. But they are a lot bigger than I expected and not nearly as helpful as I would have hoped. I haven't found any real use for them.
September 14, 2010 at 10:18 pm #249413Sdb2fsuParticipant@CPA one day thanks I appreciate the input…I too would like to have something as a quick reference note card style. I almost purchased in on my iPhone but thought it would be better in paper format. I guess I have to do my own lol. It's probably best anyway. Anyone else?
