AnonymousInactiveSun Corp. had investments in marketable equity securities costing $650,000. On June 30, Year 2, Sun decided to hold the investments indefinitely and accordingly reclassified them from trading to available-for-sale on that date. The investments' market value was $575,000 at December 31, Year 1, $530,000 at June 30, Year 2, and $490,000 at December 31, Year 2.
What amount of loss from investments should Sun report in its Year 2 income statement?
a.
$85,000
b.
$120,000
c.
$45,000
d.
$160,000
Explanation
Choice “c” is correct, $45,000 loss should be reported in the Year 2 income statement.
Rule: When marketable equity securities are transferred between trading and available-for-sale, the transfer is made at fair value, and the difference (if any) is recorded as unrealized loss and charged to the income statement. The new carrying amount becomes the basis for any future gain or loss.
Original cost $ 650,000
Unrealized I/S loss for Year 1 (75,000)
FMV at 12/31/Year 1 575,000
FMV at 6/30/Year 2 (530,000)
Unrealized loss in Year 2 I/S $ 45,000
<<Can someone explain to me why the FMV @6/30 is being used to calc the unrealized loss on the year two income statement? is it just due to the face that is when the reclassification happened from trading to available-for-sale?

AnonymousInactiveI'm glad to read people are having similar struggles with the F2 first batch of questions. I feel like the first time I took FAR there were a lot of questions from F2.
I'm finishing up nonprofits today and then all next week I'm going over F10. Then three weeks to do multiple choice incessantly. FAR on 8/30! I start a new job 9/3 so I'm really hoping to start with FAR out of the way!

so1913ParticipantI've gone through all the lectures and now going back reviewing notes and going through the homework. I should wrap up F1 and move to F2 by this evening, but now I'm scared :/ Sounds like it may take all weekend to grasp F2 (I hope not). Exam date 8/28…a lot of work to do, but that's what my weekend is dedicated to.

TncincyParticipantWell fellow ninja's I think I learned my lesson after this exam. ;-((.
Don't take studying lightly, get a focused study plan, and don't take the test until you feel ready. Sometimes we can get caught up in other's post feeling stressed about canceling or rescheduling. I do agree though that You should spend too much time studying, but absolutely take the test when you are ready. But don't feel bound by other people.
Really, who want to deal with this thing too long……
Just doing a self evaluation because I know I didn't pass, so I know what I need to do different.
It begins with a 75

MintsRGoodParticipant@tncincy You won't know for sure until 8/21 so try to push it out of your mind and enjoy the next 19 days of FAR study freedom! We all feel like we've been hit by a truck when leaving prometric, so don't count yourself out just yet. Have a nice dinner, open a bottle of wine, and forget about FAR. You put in the time and effort, so don't beat yourself up!!!! 🙂

SeattleAccountantMemberRight now it is out of your control, let it rest, it is possible that not all that bad. Meanwhile, use your days to distract yourself be it with work, time off or by doing nothing. You/your body deserves to have a break. All you could you did. Now, lets hope for the best b/c remember something like 10 -15 questions are throwaways. Think about it.
Looking forward to your score release. Keep your head up and take it as man (strong woman)!

August 2, 2013 at 10:41 pm #437138
so1913Participant@dsteele139 looks like we are in very similar situations! I also got a 70 on REG, and have an AUD and BEC pass. My AUD credit is due to expire if I don't pass FAR and REG by the end of the next test window (you may have one more window than me). I'm desperate to pass FAR when I take it at the end of the month, then its me and REG for another round hopefully in October or November. We can do this!!!

Well you're right I don't know if I passed, but I certainly feel like a truck hit me, ran me over, backed up and just waited to see if I was breathing.
I'll be ok…….

PCMemberFor those that have taken FAR already, what was the breakdown in terms of conceptual vs. calculation based MCQ? I feel like I'm good conceptually and decent at calculations (I generally know how to tackle these problems based off constant practice of Becker problems but there are times I may omit or add things I shouldn't here and there).

Mike1987Member@peko8535, I guess it depends on which chapter. If it was F2, F5, F6 it would probably take me a long time. The other chapters go by a little quicker and I can probably get 200+ done at a reasonable pace. I managed a 86% on my 2nd time through the 1st set of F2 hw. But then ended up getting 69% in the optional hw, talk bout confidence killer.

zakahracwParticipantAfter two days of stress and anxiety I finally feel relaxed about my exam on Monday. For the most part it will be out of my hands on test day. I'd like to score higher than a 75 but that is all I need. If anyone else is taking their exam on Monday, good luck 🙂
