AnonymousInactiveSo confused… would really appreciate any help
On May 1, 2002, Bolt Corp. issued 11% bonds in the face amount of $1,000,000, which mature on May 1, 2012.
The bonds were issued to yield 10%, resulting in bond premium of $62,000. Bolt uses the effective interest method of amortizing bond premium. Interest is payable semiannually on November 1 and May 1.
In its October 31, 2002 balance sheet, what amount should Bolt report as unamortized bond premium? The answer is
60100
The entry is
Int Expense 53100
Bond Premium 1900
Cr. Interest Payable 55000
Why is this interest payable? It says because as of 10/31 6 month period has passed, interest exp must be recognized but cash isn't since its due the next day. This would make sense but a similar question…
On January 1, 2004, Kay Inc. issued its 10% bonds in the face amount of $400,000, which mature on January 1, 2014. The bonds were issued for $354,000 to yield 12%, resulting in a bond discount of $46,000. Kay uses the effective interest method of amortizing bond discount. Interest is payable semiannually on July 1 and January 1.
At June 30, 2004, Kay's unamortized bond discount would be (ANSWER 44760)
But this time, the entry is
Interest expense 21240
Cr. Bond discount 1240
Cr. Cash 20000
I guess my main question is, why are these entries different? If cash is paid the next day July 1, why isnt it recorded as a interest payable instead of cash like the first entry?

peetreeMember@lbi Remember the problem states that the fair value equals received equals the carrying value of the asset given up. Even though these are wordy questions, they can kill you if you don't take your time on them. Force yourself to take your time on them and write out the journal entry.
Dr. New equipment 10,000
Dr. Plug
Cr. Old equipment 10,000.
Cr. Cash 2,000
You already know that you gave up cash, you already know that you're giving up an asset with the same value as the asset you're receiving, so your credit to cash needs to be offset with something, and you most definitely know what that something is because you're a badass.
@cpahopeful It looks to be just semantics of the person writing the question because I agree with you there is no real difference. Luckily the question is asking just for the premium and discount amounts but yeah I can't see what would make one cash and the other interest payable. I guess if you could imagine an operation that doesn't have a proper accounts payable department and records expenses as a direct reduction in cash π (but that is crazy talk!)
Anyone else know why one is interest payable and the other cash?

lbi18MemberThanks, @peetree!
I just reread the section of the chapter and it said to assume any FV of assets received includes any cash paid. Very tricky!
It does make sense to me now though, thanks again.

FlipACoinParticipantPeetree…Got me! I was hoping MCLKT would chime in with some of her CPA-sexyness. Her knowledge of bonds is outstanding.
I'm guessing you are right though. Potato Potaaato. The only thing I could think of that could impact the calculation is time zone differences to parent company in a subsidary type situation? What is the last day of the period in one location is the first day of the period in another? Damn I hope something like that is never on an exam…
February 14, 2013 at 10:23 pm #400269
peetreeMember@FlipaCoin LOL I would send a strongly worded letter to the examiners if they wanted me to take timezones into my account.

MelansMemberHey guys, its been a long while since I posted. And I haven't caught up on all the posts- busy season is killing me this year, I have been super busy. A couple of thoughts, I am really relieved to read that some of you have been working on this just like me, and by that I mean off and on for a few years- I thought I was the only slacker dragging this out. And I am also glad I am not the only one who didn't take this straight out of college. I went into to private and then to public, so there were several years between school and the decision to tackle this beast. But this time around no foolin', no slackin', stay focused and get this done! So motivated, I am working on it during busy season (one of my previous excuses to not study). And I will admit, my progress has not been what I hoped, but there is constant progress!!! Thank you guys for all the motivation and stories, and while I haven't had much input lately- I have enjoyed reading your study tales.
And as one final thought- kudos to all you that get up and study before work- seriously that is amazing.

joch0803MemberHey Everyone!!
Quick question…….what does everyone think about the Wiley test bank. I am currently using Becker self study and it has gotten me thru two sections, but I am wondering if I should supplement with something else also to give me an extra push for final review (which I will have four full days for).
Any advice is appreciated : )
