jw – when are you testing?

Have fun with F3, Nam. It's definitely not my favorite! I did meet my goal though. Lets hope VIEs aren't stressed b/c its way over my head.

Onto F4 today, which for now is much nicer (so far).

    B 71 - 79 EXPIRED
    A 69 - 75 EXPIRED
    R 65 - 48 - 45

Experience - Done, like WAAAY done.
Still need 30 more credits, in basket weaving (gotta love new CA requirements)

Hustlin – I haven't scheduled yet, but probably the end of January or first part of February. I don't want to schedule until I feel like I have a good grasp on the material. Also, I haven't passed a section yet, so my 18 months hasn't started.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

Hustin: When are you taking the test? I still havent recieved my NTS..

The official released MCQ of AICPA are the easiest ones within the Becker self-study.

Are they comparable to the MCQ on the “real” FAR exam?

I'm taking the FAR section on saturday, starting to get nervous right now

    #399519

@jw: Good call. You will get your first pass soon, I can feel it!

@Nam: I have not scheduled yet, but am shooting for the 2nd or 3rd week in Feb, as I am going out of town the 3rd weekend. (and want to be able to relax!) Definitely going to shoot to work a chapter a day so I can get everything covered and review for a couple of weeks. FAR is really all about making it all come together (I hope).

@Tobias: I have found them to be similar, though you can not expect to see the same question. If you think they are easy that is good news! You got this!

    B 71 - 79 EXPIRED
    A 69 - 75 EXPIRED
    R 65 - 48 - 45
    F 56 - 61 - 65 - 64

    Hey everyone!

First time actually posting on here…

I'm reviewing for my retake of FAR…had about 2 months to study for it but I got married in the middle of those two months and so that was pretty distracting…long story short, i got a 69 : /

Hoping I can bang out the review and take the test mid-late Jan. Am I crazy for trying to take it that soon, only having reviewed and taken notes for 3 chapters and not having reviewed any sims????

    Reality checks are welcomed.

    #399521

@HustlinHustlin: Thanks for the motivation 😉

I will do my final review of all chapters tomorrow and than relax to have a fresh mind on saturday.

Now that I’m done lamenting about my failure, I’ll provide my thoughts and hope this may help candidates who are getting ready to take FAR soon.

I took FAR at the end of Q4 2012 and scored a 67. I was really shocked about the grade I received and was eager to see my score report. When I got it, I find out that I aced the MCQs (3 “stronger’ and 2 “comparable” = stronger for “overall” MCQs). I was weaker in Sims. My testlets were getting ridiculously harder. T2 was much harder than T1 and T3 was something I’ve never experienced before because I literally blindly guessed more 18 questions out of 30. I thought for sure that I will fail because of T3 but I was wrong.

The best and biggest lesson I’ve learn from the report is that “perfection is not necessary” for a CPA exam. AICPA is absolutely right when they say that the grading is not based on how many questions you got right or wrong but instead it’s based on a complicated matrix including how well you did comparing to other candidates. Logically, I couldn’t have had an overall stronger in MCQs because I royally screwed up in T3 but because my performance in MCQs was (Medium – Hard – Hard )(I’m guessing based on my report), I ended up with an overall stronger in MCQs. All I needed to pass was a comparable in Sims.

The real problem I encountered was, with no surprise, poor time management. I wasted a lot of time trying to excel in MCQs including questions that were most likely pre-test. With only 54mns for Sims, I panicked, moved too fast and had to fill in 0s for 2 of them.

I knew the material fairly well but did not manage my time well. I’m retaking FAR on Jan 7 and have not been able to really study because of the holidays and a sick child. However, I’m very surprised of how much of the material I still remember because when I take a progress test I’m scoring in high 80s based only on what I’ve learned during Q4 2012.

My strategy on the 7th is to move fast fast fast. I think I’m even willing to sacrifice on of my testlets. I need at least 1h 45mn for the Sims. I will not try to get every single point in MCQs because it will backfire in the Sims. If I don’t know the answer to a question or I know it, but it will take too long to calculate, I’ll just guess it and flag it for review. Once in the Sims, I’ll slowly do the ones I know well without pressure due to time and then do the other to the best of my ability and perhaps use the authoritative literature for the first time.

I’m now a strong believer that you don’t need to know everything in FAR, you just need to know enough to pull a passing grade. Perfection is not necessary. Fair knowledge and great time management can get you through FAR (in my opinion). At this point I don’t care whether I’ll pass or fail, I just want for the first time since I’ve been taking CPA exams, not to feel the time constraint. I’ll let you know how that goes.

    REG: 68, 75
    AUD: 80

Anyone else having a hard time with i/co eliminations in Ch.3? Some questions are easy but on some I'm just not getting it. Moving on to 4 for the time being.

@ Tobias-Germany – Did you happen to do a study abroad in London, England around 1998? I knew a Toby from Germany back then…we lived in the same family-sponsored flat.

Why is EVERY question tonight a present value question or a bond question, not my strong areas thats for sure!

Seems like a lot of progress is being made on the board today! I am jealous work is so busy i am trying to get in 2 or 2 and a half hours tonight and I can see it being a struggle already. Still feeling very overwhelmed with the material if I am not working this weekend i am hoping to make a ton of headway!

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

Hi to All! I am first time poster, long time reader.

FAR exam upcoming on Jan 27, no idea of what to expect as this is my first CPA section to be tested!

Used solely Becker online review and although made flashcards, there are so many of them that I have no time to review them 🙁

Going into the exam I feel more prepared for AUD than FAR despite having spent close to 2x time on FAR so far. Is a feeling of being under-prepared is universal among the exam takers? Like being prepared for only about 70%!

Another thing, I've noticed that with the hand-held calculator, pen and paper I'm way much faster than with screen based tools. So, now once I got email about recent changes that will not permit use of pen and paper but some rather board, i'm so not happy. Did any of you guys already have experience using that board? What is it anyway?

@Stay_positive: I'm not the guy you know 😉 Never been in England.

Just finished another progress test with a 91% (FAR tomorrow). I think I will reread the lectures in the Becker textbook and than get some rest and sleep to successfully pass the first section
