Is it ok to start a FAR Study Group? I retook Audit yesterday and although I don’t have a gut feeling either way if I passed or not, I am going to start on FAR. I am using Becker self-study and purchased the Ninja Notes for FAR.

I am looking forward to reading a/b everyone’s progression. Good Luck!

    Aud- 11/28/12 (72), 02/27/13 (72), 04/06/2013 77!!
    FAR-tbd
    BEC-tbd
    REG-tbd

    Hi Far fam,

Question for you all. My exam is May 31st. Currently, I plan on finishing the lectures by 4/30 (today if I'm ambitious) and then I plan to use May as my note taking and MCQ/review month. With the amount of info on the test, is there a chance I could pass with this method. Is anyone else studying this way? I'm using Roger btw.

    AUD - 64,77
    BEC - 74,72,72,78
    REG - 63,74,85
    FAR - 73, 5/31/2013 - 76! DONE!

Everyone learns differently. For me, that would be way to long. I started studying Far right after I finished Reg (April 4th) and I am set to take it May 8th. I am almost wishing I were taking it earlier. With that said, I am a senior in college and finished my internship and am not working so I have a lot of time during the day to spend on studying. Your plan sounds solid, but I know for me I would probably get burnt out on the material if I spent that long on it. Just be sure to keep going back to the stuff you started first as that will likely becoming a distant memory after a month. Keep working the MCQ's and you should be fine. Disclaimer: I'm no expert… that's just what works for me. Good Luck!

Question for anyone that has taken FAR already and failed (as this is probably the only way you would have known) but anyone else feel free to answer. I just took a practice test on Becker which actually went pretty well, but on the Sims I got points off for two things that seem odd. In one of the journal entries I entered the two accounts in reverse order but with the right numbers (ex. Interest Expense of 15000 and Lease Liability for 85000) in that order. On the exam would that count as points off or would you still receive credit if you had the correct accounts and amounts. Secondly, in another one of the sims my score was a 67 but I did everything correct. It was also a journal entry problem and I didn't put 0's in the credit columns? Are you suppose to do that on the actual exam?

I know this is nitpicky stuff, and I know how most people feel about practice exams but I was just wondering from those that have taken it how the examiners might handle situations such as those.

Also, do you ever receive partial credit for a problem, like one that you may have screwed up a number in the beginning and completed the rest correctly based on that number? Probably not, as the CPA exam is ruthless but just curious?

bcjasper09: you won't get points taken away for the ordering of your journal entries if they are the correct debit and credit and you have the right numbers. Also, you get partial credit.

Anyone planning on using a “brain dump” when they walk into the exam? I brain dumped all my mnemonics and formulas for BEC and AUD, but I'm not sure what to focus on for FAR. I'm thinking government journal entries, pension entries, a few equity entries (especially treasury stock), cash to accrual and accrual to cash conversion, and consolidation entries.

Any other big ticket items you guys are planning on jotting down right off the bat?

EDIT: Adding non-monetary exchanges to my list, those are always tricky.

    BEC: PASS
    AUD: PASS
    FAR: PASS
    REG: PASS

I'm trying to not want to die studying for FAR but Becker homework has been rather discouraging. Like bcjasper09 I just finished an internship so I'm studying like it's my full time job because I've got nothing else going on. I'm taking it may 17th and so far I'm on F6 but I should have about 2 weeks of solid review left to go over things. If I'm scoring in the mid 60s on the low end with my average in the low-mid 70s for first pass, should I be okay? I just took audit April 9th and I'm still waiting on scores so I have no idea really what to expect as far as the comparison between Becker scores and the actual exam.

On my final exam I averaged 95% on the MCQ- but I know there was a mistake in one of the questions because there were two of the same answers and the one I chose was wrong but the answer explanation was right. (It was a Yes No question… I hate those). On the Sims I got 100% on all but the research question.. I know final exams are not reflective of your score but I know I am at a place where everything is starting to click. I just worry about IFRS questions. I am now reviewing with Wiley Test Bank for a change of pace, and must say that it is a great investment!

One month until my FAR exam on May 29. Just finished approx 600 MC in Wiley Test Bank over the month of April. Averaging a 73%. Need to do the rest of the MC and start drilling the Sims.

This is the home stretch for me – this is about where I was with my previous 3 exams and things turned out well.

Gov't accounting is just a kick to the gut. It's like, here, memorize everything about GAAP and IFRS and when you're done with that, he's about 150 pages of accounting from an alternate universe that you need to memorize that is nothing like the stuff you've learned.

Oh and to pile on, I went and started marketing my CFO services business and I landed a customer. So I have to do the first four months of their 2013 FS in quickbooks during May as well. At least they are paying me for that.

Just need to pass this last one, get the license and the I can focus on family and growing my business.

    Good luck to all.

    BEC - 5/2012 - 91
    AUD - 8/2012 - 89
    REG - 1/2013 - 90

@Qlad – you are my wingman in this month of pain.

What are you using for study aides? Any lessons learned from your first attempt?

@gchantur I posted my in the FAR exam experience thread but compared to Becker Final exams, the SIMS were definitely more manageble than Becker. I would say that the MCQs were about the same.

Good luck to both you and bcjasper09 next week. Now on to BEC.

    AUD 01/17/2013 (92)
    REG 02/28/2013 (85)
    FAR 04/26/2013 (85)
    BEC 05/30/2013 (88)
