FAR: Review or move forward?

I am planning to take FAR early July. So far I have only covered the first 3 chapters from Becker. My dilemma is I am forgetting the material I learn…And I wanted to get other pp.’s take on the most effective method for studying FAR. I realize everyone has their own way of studying but FAR being the beast that it is, maybe there is one common theme that helps ppl pass it.

I am not sure if I should keep moving forward or take my time to review the previous chapters. My plan is to finish all chapters one time by June 6th so I can spend the rest of the time reviewing the material. But I am afraid I might have to relearn most of the early chapters by then. So I was thinking that after finishing every 3 chapters I shld spend a couple of days to review all 3 and then move forward..

    Any thoughts?

@2014 CPA, I am having the same dilemma! About to start F3. Except, I am also struggling with the HW in F2. Not sure if I should chug through the lectures still, or take my time and move forward once I am comfortable.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    @2014 CPA, @Disco Stu

I am in the same dilemma as well lol. At this point, I am honestly considering abandoning CPAexcel and just focus on the Wiley Textbook.

I was in your shoes in February but I am using CPA Excel. I was so determined to learn the material that I didn't care how long it took, but that was a huge mistake. I find that sticking to a plan works better even though you might not learn every single detail.

Someone else said that you should be writing key terms down as you read and then re-writing your notes later to review. I think this is a great idea. I also recommend getting the audio review and putting it on an ipod and listening to it on the go.

Don't waste 6 months studying for FAR like I am doing, but that's just my view. Save as much time possible to review the multiple choice questions.

    AUD - 66, 79
    REG - 73, 76
    BEC - 79

I suggest take a couple quizzes on the chapters you've already covered as a review right before you start a new chapter. If you spend several days reviewing the old stuff before you start the new stuff, you may run out of time or you will know the early stuff signficantly better than the new stuff. Save yourself several weeks at the end to review everything. I went through all of the material and all the MCQ/SIMS once then went back section by section: I reviewed my notes, the Ninja Notes, and the Becker Outline Notes for a section, then did all the MCQ for the section and jotted down things I was still having trouble on, then moved to the next section. If you don't leave enough time at the end for the review of all topics then you probably will lose a lot of information. Whereas if you start reviewing now after only doing 3 chapters, you will just have to review those three chapters again later. I hope that made sense.

I didn't watch most of lectures so that could be part of the difference in strategies. My way may not work for you, but I found doing the MCQ was a more valuable learning technique for me than listening to the teacher.

I agree, I gave up on the lectures because they basically read the powerpoints out loud and added little to none value to the material. I am sticking to reading the text now because there is more detail and it is very well explained.

I agree with taking notes during your review of the material but CPAexcel has so much material to cover that it is daunting. I suggest rewriting any condensed review notes that you have which will help the material sticks in your mind and then go back to CPAexcel for detailed information if you are not grasping a concept. That is what I did for my retake. After I did this, my 30 set MCQs scores increased from the 60s to 70s. I did non stop MCQs and only took notes if I really did not understand a topic or guessed and got a right answer.

    Florida:
AUD: 73, 81! Thank you Lord!
BEC: 73, 77! Thank you Lord! and WTB
REG: 71, 82! Thank you Lord! and A71
FAR: 72, 78! Thank you God and my Mommy in Heaven!

^^^^^Yeah, what she said. :)^^^^^ Too many notes is overwhelming and there are just too many details in FAR to take a note on everything that seems important.
