FAR – Reality Check

So… I have FAR scheduled on May 29th and I don’t know if I should take it or reschedule.

I failed FAR the first time I took it in February and I haven’t studied since. I got a 54 🙁

If I reschedule FAR to the next window, I will have to take 2 exams (FAR & REG) on the same window. It will be my last chance to take both before I lose my credit for BEC in August. So if you were in my situation, what would you do? Do you think it’s possible to re-study FAR in less than 3 weeks?

I work 36 hours a week / 5 days a week but planning on taking 3 extra vacation days in addition to my weekends off between now and exam day.

Would really love to hear your thoughts.

I think it is possible….but you will have to be very focused and dedicated! Can you commit to about 40 hours a week for the next 3 weeks?

You are pretty much doing what I am attempting to do. If the money isn't an issue I say go for it. We just have to buckle down. Plenty of people pass in 3 weeks. What study material do you have? I am using Becker, Wiley Testbank, personal notes (from last study time) and Ninja notes. My plan/suggestion is to take a diagnostic Simulated Exam; Listen to all the Becker Lectures you struggled with; Throughly read personal notes and Ninja Notes and take Wiley quizzes after finishing chucks of the reading material; Take Simulated Exams 2 – 3 times a week; rinse and repeat

Not sure it will be enough but we would get our score back pretty quickly and can start again if need be. If you sit now, all you are out is the money. I think it will increase your probablity of passing the next time as well.

    @Mrs.CPA

If you received a score in the 70's for FAR I would say go ahead and take it in May, or if you had continued to study I would say go for it, but you said you got a 54 and haven't studied. You could study like a maniac, but that exam is a beast. I just passed it finally and it was so hard this last time I was sure I had flunked. It is probably too expensive to reschedule it now, so go ahead and take it and try your best. Since you may lose credit for BEC go ahead and try for FAR. Study as much as you can between now and May 29th. Best of luck!

    AUD Passed 1/22/13
    BEC Passed 7/12/13
    REG Passed 5/9/14

I'm in the same boat with everyone, sort of…

I'll be taking FAR on May 29th as well…I started studying on April 29th using Becker. It's my first ever experience with the CPA exam. I work 40 hours per work with a contract position that eats up a few more hours plus two kids under the age of 3. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have 2nd thoughts on a couple different occasions to reschedule!

But I figure if I can kill myself now, prepare as best I can and by some act of a higher power pass this thing, then I can take 2 next window (AUD and BEC)…if not I'll know by June 7th that I've failed and to try to get back on the horse and push BEC into the 4th quarter window.

At least that's the story I'm running with…:)

taking far on 5/31, so we have a bunch of people in the ‘end of the month' club. I made a study plan for each day until the 31st and am already behind a chapter! But steadily keeping on…

I am there with you on the 31st…and I am way behind! I hate this section so I tend to put it off until the last minute which is so stupid, if I hate it so much then do well and pass the bloody thing and then I don't have to deal with it again. All I can say is the next 20 days my life needs to revolve 100% around FAR!

I'm taking FAR on 5/30 with just over 50 hrs studied over the last 2 months. Underestimated the toll of my 1st tax season and took a break. However, now that I'm back with 3 weeks left to go I'm really questioning whether I can be ready in time. I'm putting 5hrs a day in and plan on 16hrs each over the next three weekends. I'm almost through my Yaeger videos and have begun required MCQs. Despite having 50hrs in already, at times it feels as if I have only put in 5hrs…especially when doing MCQs. I'm starting to get a little freaked out. Any suggestions?

I'll be there on the 31st as well. Fortunately, I have my schedule pretty well cleared between now and then (except for these lousy work hours). Good luck everyone.

I am with you!!! Taking FAR 5/29. I don't feel very confident about it right now but am finally picking up steam. I struggled with it when I first started studying last month and was very intimidated by the sheer volume of material. Picked up Jeff's FAR Audio (already had Ninja Notes) and it seems to be helping a LOT! I can squeeze in study time while driving, cutting grass, etc. I highly recommend it!! I just need to eat, sleep and breathe FAR for the next 18 days!!!

I plan to take off from studying between my test and the score release since it will only be a few days. If by some chance I pass, move on to REG. If I fail, I will have another date with FAR the 2nd of July. Nothing to lose but the money so I am going for it!! Good luck to everyone!!!

    AUD 4/12/12 79
    FAR 5/29/12 76
    REG 8/2/12 82
    BEC 8/30/12 72 Retake 10/18/12 76!!! DONE!!!!
