FAR – Pensions

I’m in the middle of studying pensions and all the verbiage has me wondering a very simple question: Given the move away from defined benefit plans the past few decades, how important is this knowledge? Have any of you ever worked in pension accounting? It seems to be me this section is a dinosaur. Of course, perhaps I’m wrong.

FWIW, I have a Defined Benefit Plan and we have several clients that have them as well. I'm not sure if it's a dinosaur, quite yet.

My girlfriend and mom have a defined benefit plan. A lot of state jobs have them. Even when these plans are replaced with 401(k) plans some accountant is going to have to account for old defined benefit plans until all the retirees die.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Yeah, I guess you're right. I definitely don't want to be that guy I guess.

    gt5717b?…sounds like GT's email.

@The_Intangible, you're correct, it's my old GT email address. I used it for so long in school, it's just become my “go-to” username. Did you go there as well?
