FAR – How Deep Do I Go?!

I’m reviewing FAR now and getting frustrated because there is so much verbiage! It may be because I’m only on concepts, theories, etc. I’m much more comfortable with calculations, entries, etc. than I am with trying to memorize all of these concepts and theories. Should I be spending a lot of time on this material?

Yes, you need to be spending a lot of time in it. I'm a firm believer in concepts – if you understand the concepts, then you can figure out the computations…but if you know the computations, you aren't necessarily able to figure out the concepts. However, I wouldn't specifically say that you need to be memorizing the concepts and theories. You need to be understanding them. But you definitely need to be studying them…even though they'll take way longer than you want to even think about!

Aaarrgh! That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the feedback!

@Lilla, I saw on the other thread you only spent about 50 hours on studying for FAR. Did you just already have the concepts and theories down from prior classes? I'm about 15 hours in and still trying to wrestle these things down. I understand the concepts, there's just so many to get to.

@nclynch The information was somewhat familiar from my accounting classes that I had taken 1 year to 18 months prior…but I felt the same as you, that things were all confusing and overlapping in my head at 15 hours in. For me, everything just swims in my head until I finish reading and start doing MCQs (I read the Wiley book completely, then start doing MCQs and SIMs). As I do the MCQs, everything starts to tie together. Not that I know everything and it all gets sorted out perfectly, just that it starts to sort itself out! So I wouldn't worry about it being confusing right now…but would try to at least understand it as I read it, and it sounds like you've got that.

What review material(s) are you using?

@InfernoOmni -.- You know you're a CPA candidate when you find innuendo in accounting! lol.

LOL @InfernoOmni! I would usually type something like that on purpose and elaborate, but I guess my wits are being replaced with the detail of concepts and theories.

@Lilla, using CPAExcel, Wiley Books/Test Bank, and Ninja Audio/Notes. I do understand it as I read it which is comforting. It's just those little tidbits of information I'm scared of forgetting. For instance, the statement “Useful information includes the amount, timing, and uncertainty of an entity's cash flows.” What if I get a question that says “Which of the following are true: I. Useful information includes the amount and timing of an entity's cash flow.” I choose I. and get it wrong because it didn't mention the uncertainty! As I type this I'm thinking I might be overreacting, but then again I may not be.
