I need more guidance and help how to better study for FAR.

So far I have gone through chapters 1-5 becker. I have written my notes for each chapter. I thought it be a good idea to break down the first five chapters first and then 6-9. I have two moths till my exam. I have gone back after wrtiting 3 legal pads filled with notes for Ch 1-5 and now find it better to type my notes in excel. I have gone back and re wrote all my notes for 1-2 in excel. I plan on doing all the questions for every two chapters (after Im done typing all my notes in excel).

so for the next 3 weeks I will do two chapters a week which will include typing all my notes in excel and working the multiple choice evenly. I also thought since two months from now i will not remember everything – Ive decided to purchase the index cards for becker so I can keep my mind refreshed on the chapters I was done with.

If anyone can please share their thoughts on what helped you to better prepare yourselves for this exams. Maybe some thoughts on maybe leaving the multiple choice for after all the notes and lectures? Maybe just learning the material full fledged before working the multple choice is a better idea. I really need help with this because this exam will get me over the hump.. I use becker..

Thanks a ton for all the responses and I’ll be sure to read this post every hr of the day to look for all your advice. Thank you so much and good luck with all your exams and may god bless you

jwaballa – I would not recommend waiting to work the multiple choice questions. I would use the progress test feature of the Becker passmaster software. Go ahead and read and write your notes on each chapter but I would then work the MCQ after each chapter. I would save the supplmentals for my second time through. Every day I would do a progress test on the prior chapters that I have covered sometimes twice in the beginning. For example while I am doing chapter 2 studying, I would take the time to do a progress test or two every day. The number of questions for each progress test is based on the percentage of the chapter to the exam. It really does not take that much time and will keep much of the material fresh in your mind while you progress through the chapters.

    Good Luck on your Studying!!

Do the MC throughout the process and then you can do the overall supplemental after you've typed your notes. You can always keep doing progress tests as Lee_IN stated. The key is to repeat everything and keep reviewing because as you said you will forget things. That's why doing the MC as you go through the process is important. You might have reviewed the material but you need to practice it! And of course do the simulations after each chapter.

the MCQs get easier the more you do them. . .the first time around I could do maybe 100 questions in a day and in the final 2 weeks of review I did as many as 300-400 questions in a day. Just keep practicing. . .you'll get there.

Lee_IN is right – answer the MC questions as you do each chapter, do the progress tests frequently. I just did one for BEC chapters 1, 2 & 4 – there was a total of 55 questions. I am currently studying chapter 3 right now. By doing the progress tests you will keep the material fresh in your mind. Re-readweak sections.

I also have the Gleim testbank questions and review these as well. I try to take a topic and answer all te questions and then re-do the missed MC!. The Gleim testbank is about $60. You can buy it online and use the testbank the same day.

Taking the notes is a good idea and the flashcards help also. You are on target to cover the material and have time to review. You have a good strategy. Just modify the MC and progress tests.

Didn't Peter suggest that you should review after at least every 3rd chapter?

    Good luck!

Thank you guys for all the suggestion – especially the ones that have already passed and are here to help others out.

CPA Journey & Lee the progress test is a great idea to keep your mind going and keep refreshing what you already went through in the past. Doing the multiple choice after every chapter is what I thought was best and leaving the supplemental questions till the end (final review stage) so that you do questions you have not yet seen. I think readin the questiosn even if right is a good idea just to make sure you got the question coorectly and not by accident or coincidence. I have failed BEC 3 times (69,72,73) which I will hopefully take in november god willing I can knock this beast out in august. I then have mini tax season so I wont be able to pick up the books again till after october 15. I passed regulations the second time around with an 86 (72 first time around). I also passed audit with an 78 (51,62 & 71 before). The 51 and 62 was 2 and a half yrs ago and that was mostly due to in experience and not knowing how to study for this exam. I think every test you need to have a better strategy and i NEED to pass this test for FAR first time around. Its been quite a never ending journey and I have never given up. I counted the amount of legal pads filled with notes in the passed for all the times I took the exams and it came out to be 72. I found that you cant just write the notes to right them down u need to really know why your writing them down and some time strategy to kep everything refreshed which has always been a big problem of mine and FAR is the worst so I need as much advice as I can get. My REG is up May 31, 2011 I need to finish these exams this yr so all the advice would be wonderful.

CPA JOURNEY I have looked at getting the glein test bank. Where can I purchase that? It would be a great idea to have questions that I have not yet seen.

ALSO – what about the simulations? What Im trying to do for every answer is get the answer right and right the journal entry before I actually pick the answer that way I teach my self. Its all about keeping up with the materials. You guys have given me great ideas and I really appreciate and cherish your willingness to go out of your way and help the ones like myself trying to get through this dificult time. Thanks again and welcome much more advise not only for me but others that read this post who are strugling as well. I'll keep checking in for more advice and chats. This site was a wonderful idea. Jeff your the man..

    Thanks,

    Jeff
