    I am really struggling with the governmental section in FAR….all of it. The journal entries mostly but even understanding how it all works and which fund does what or spends how is driving me nuts! Any helpful ideas or tips to retain the information is greatly appreciated.

    Do you have Ninja Plus? Bob does a really good job with gov't stuff on there. My gov't/NFP background was lacking, so I watched the vids a few times, worked the examples and did the entries as he did them, and then did a gaggle of MCQs on it. Doing entries anytime I could to solidify the skills.

    And after all that, I bet i didn't have 10 gov't questions on my exam. :/

    Thanks Ben, I did watch ninja plus the first time around (about 3 weeks ago) and I was thinking to re study and refresh myself I should watch something else (I refuse to watch Wiley lectures.. for some odd reason I get so angry with the professors and the way they sound lol), however I took your suggestion and started watching ninja plus again, just finished the first one and I agree, it really is the best. Don't know why I even tried to venture out 🙂

    I can't believe I'm saying this, but I studied bonds, inventory and government so hard that I hope all my questions are on those lol :/

    CharleneR- I am also majorly struggling with GVT– for some reason NFP clicks with me but government is just this major block….(average on ninja questions after going through them 3 times is 45% if that gives you any clue) I have watched video after video, read my text a dozen times, and even downloaded a kindle book on the subject– and I am still just not getting it…. HOWEVER– I did the set of free government questions on the cpa review for free site yesterday and took notes and for some reason their explanations made a little bit more sense to me than ninjas or Rogers. Not saying I totally understand all of it, but after doing those I feel like I am getting closer…. so you might want to give that a shot… GOOD LUCK

    @charleneR

    If you knew the stuff in the Plus videos and looked over the appropriate IFRS stuff, you'd have aced the govt portion of my exam. And most of the rest of it too.

    Also.

    I know we can't divulge stuff on our exam and blah blah blah. But I REALLY enjoyed the Plus videos that covered contract and installment sales. That one is just Emmy award winning stuff. Make sure you give it a watch.

    You got this!

    Ben, that made me really laugh out loud! “Emmy award winning” lolll let me know what else you think qualifies for an Emmy.

    Thanks!

    Gov accounting is really easy once you understand all the funds / memorize the mnemonics, trust me. Repetition is so key with this particular topic. I highly recommend re-writing the material over and over, understand what goes into each fund, etc. Try looking at it high level in outline form. When you do MCQ's take notes as well, filling in other small facts in your outline. These are easy points on exam day and over time you'll be able to get through a lot of questions quickly so keep practicing. I haven't passed FAR yet but I focused heavily on this area and it definitely helps. The key for me was rewriting / memorization.

    For example: The General Fund includes – taxes (primarily property tax), tickets, fines, police, education, fire, public safety, UNRESTRICTED state grants. Memorize stuff like this.

    Lastly, I've found its easy to eliminate what answers do not belong, especially in simpler questions. If it is asking you about the governmental funds, a few of the other answer choices will include non-governmental funds such as the Internal Service Fund.

    Hope this helps a little bit at least, keep at it!

    You might want to watch some proper videos – taught by actual professors, state accountants. Try youtube.
