FAR FRUSTRATION.

I just went through the NFP and Government accounting today. I feel completely lost, I read every word on the Becker textbook and I went over the flashcards before redoing the homework questions and I got worse scores than when I went through it the first time about a month and a half ago. My confidence is completely broken. Actually, I think I’ve been getting slightly lower scores on my homework questions. I’m taking notes, I’m reading the textbook but I am not having any success. Makes me wonder if I can do this at all.

I feel your frustration bro. Especially since I took FAR twice and got 74 both times! For some reason I can't seem to get myself to study and I have the test again on Monday :(.

    Far 7/30/12 74, 74, 75
    Bec 11/11/12 74, 78

    I'm feeling similar frustrations.

I was doing light MCQs my first time through just viewing the lectures; just class questions and a few TBS. 6 weeks later and I'm struggling through my final review on where I breezed through before.

Someone from a Becker live class said (before I realized attending was a waste of my time and switching to self-study) that FAR is a “mile wide and an inch deep.” Meaning, having a basic understanding of many topics is better than knowing the tiny minutiae of a few.

With the sheer scope of the content it's easy to get bogged down in the tiny details. Judging by the the AICPA released questions — and hopefully FAR veterans would agree — focusing on bigger picture concepts seems to be the better approach.

    AUD - Pass
    FAR - Pass
    BEC - Pass
    REG - Nov

If you have Becker, watch the lectures. They're really helpful. Government and NFP are a blessing in disguise on FAR. They're a huge chunk of the exam which scares a lot of people because a lot have never seen Government and NFP before, but in reality, Government and NFP are far more basic than much of the rest of FAR. You really only need to know the foundations of each and the concepts, and you're ready to get the vast majority of these questions correct.

If you are having problems with government, if you state has a CAFR report that is accessible they usually come with an item that tells you how to read thourgh them and gives a breakdown of the levels and financials, i found this helped me out a ton.

    BEC 73, 71, 79 (1/3/12)
    AUD 48, 70 (1/31/12), 85 (4/9/12)
    REG 70, 61, 77 (2/29/12)
    FAR 42, 74 (5/29/12), 80 (7/16/12)
    Ethics - 98 (4/20/12)
    Officially a CPA (8/9/12)
