Hey guys,

I was wondering how often people have seen ratio questions on the FAR exam? Is it an area were is should be absolutely memorized for the exam in your opinion? Thanks

Ratios as in Current ratio/acid test/debt to equity?

I'm studying far right now and skimmed over that lesson pretty quickly. I studied them in class more than once and also studied them when I took AUD.

I can only speculate as to their coverage on FAR, but they are, in many ways, a core part of accounting and understanding financial statements.

To that end, I would imagine they are certainly worth knowing for FAR.

Yes, I am talking about those ratio's. They are found in F7 for Becker's self review. I am thinking that some of the ratios listed are more important than others, or have a higher chance of being tested. For instance I will certainly memorize what the inventory and A/R ratio's are, for both # of days and excluding days, but I feel that ratio's such as return on common equity and DuPont return on assets, and these other ratio's which I did not spend time learning about during my undergraduate courses are not worth the time to memorize.

This is my thinking and I'm just curious to what other people think.

I didn't memorize all of them. I said it was an acceptable risk I was willing to take. With that said, I made sure I understood the simple ones like the current ratio, debt to equity ratio, etc.

You might get some questions regarding the tougher ones to remember but I figured, in that case, screw the examiners and their silly questions.

@stephAV I tried to approach it as thinking, “there is only so much the examiners can test me on”

I'd rather have other things nailed down in my head somewhere than silly formulas. Memorizing ratios is a terrible way to study for FAR in my opinion. Understanding the concepts and logic behind FAR is by far a better use of our limited brain power.

peetree is right — you should know the basic ones. Not memorizing the rest of the ratios is a risk worth taking.
