I am looking to increase my score by about 15 points on my retake on FAR in May from my exam I just took in March. I have seen from the FAR experience thread some big score jumps 12-20 points but wanted to see if there were any others willing to give advice on how to attack studying for FAR. I believe I didn’t allow myself enough time to grasp the concepts and struggled mainly with the biggest section “Financial Statement Accounts and “Specific Transactions, Events, Disclosures.” I have not received my score detail report either but feel that based on my scores in NINJA MCQ these are my weakest two areas. Any advice would be great, thanks.

@cruzer, I was sad when I saw your post about not passing FAR. I think we are very similar students and I was hoping you'd pull off a
    pass in March.

I had trouble with a couple of subject areas (Cash flows, leases, and a few others) and found short videos on Khan Academy to help me understand them. It took a few viewings and a TON of paper and pencil MCQ practice to get those topics in my head. I wrote out about 1,200 MCQs when I went through the Ninja test bank the first time. I just have to see the whole problem worked out to grasp some of these topics.

    Good luck, you got this!!!

@Mecrushya Thanks. Glad to see you made it through the beast and are done. Yeah I think I didn’t take my time enough and ended up shorting myself on the last two sections (Govt and NFP) at the end which probably killed me as well in the MCQ’s. The good thing is there is no NFP in the new exam and Govt is only to be 5-15%. Financial Statement Accounts I mentioned in my post above, however, will increase in testing material in the new exam so I think if I can nail down some of the weaker areas particular to this section I should be fine. I got some rough SIMS I thought as well and I am sure that hurt me as well. It was a good learning experience and I have come up with a better study plan for my May exam

@Cruzer Very sorry to hear you didn't make it.

NFP is still on the exam. All they did is just move it to some other section. Gov't maybe 5-15%, but I wouldn't take it at face value because it was like 10-15% before the changes and it wasn't surprising people got hammered by it a lot.

I hear you on the time thing. I only passed because I took a few days off work so I could study all day before sitting on Friday. I'm sure I would not have passed without getting in that extra study time.

I went from a 54 to 73. I added NINJA notes and audios. Rewriting the notes may help you.

I also went back to the areas I knew I was weak. For me it was bonds, NFP, and stmt of cf. If I didn't think I was getting it I went back and redid the lecture and homework for that section.

Good luck! I'm doing a FAR retake next month

Hi, Cruzer. I tend to be a visual learner, too (also kinesthetic). Would T-accounts help? Some people hate them, but I think they're helpful for those of us who are visual and/or kinesthetic learners. I used them constantly for FAR. Something about writing out the JE and then placing it under the fundamental accounting equation in T-account form seems to make it stick for me. Doing it mindfully and neatly, gives it a little extra boost. Maybe worth a try?

    You will beat FAR.
