Recommended prep time for FAR is 6-8 weeks @ 20 hours a week.

I agree with NK19 – once you factor out research and WC, the remaining pieces of the sims aren't worth that much.
BEC - 10/18/2010 - 79
FAR - 10/28/2010 - 82
AUD - 11/04/2010 - 73; 02/18/2011 - 86 - IT'S OVER!!!!!!
REG - 11/21/2010 - 83November 24, 2010 at 12:10 am #257986FARbehindParticipantNK19,
Written part is worth 10 pts but only one of them is graded. So the simulations are worth 20 pts. I think my exam was insane this time compared to any other time before. It seems like with every retake this exam feels less and less doable…

ethics-100November 24, 2010 at 12:58 am #257987kmcpaParticipantHi everyone! I've been following these forums for awhile but this is my first post. I passed Audit and Regulation back in April and May 2010 and now I'm struggling to pass BEC and FAR.
Took FAR today and it was just weird, or maybe i just feel very shell shocked after the exam. This was my second attempt at FAR. Made a 70 with Becker back in August. Switched to Yaegar and really studied my heart out, and felt quite prepared going into the exam. The first testlet was okay, i took around 45 minutes, 2nd testlet was okay, I felt it was wordier and the third testlet was easier then the first two. All in all, I just felt like the test was way more computational then the last time I took it. And, the sims were a beast! no surprise there.
I have absolutely no idea how I did and I keep running through it in my head trying to figure out if the testlets got harder. I'll give myself a day to sulk about it and then move on to studying for BEC which I'll be sitting for in 2011.
Thanks and good luck to everyone this testing window!
November 24, 2010 at 3:45 am #257988nevergiveupParticipant@kmcpa – Hello!
I just wanted to ask you some questions regarding Yaeger material.
I know this is kind of random but I'm really desperate.
I was wondering if you only did the assigned problems or did extra ones? I'm so nervous about this test, I really don't want to take FAR in 2011. I don't really mind other ones as much but FAR, I really don't want to.
My exam is on Friday and I've been following the posts too and seems like everyone is saying its gotten more difficult than previous exams.
So my question is, were the assigned problems enough? and how many times did you redo them? I know everyone has different learning curves but still, I think it would help to know.
Thank you in advance.
Oh and I really hope you passed! =)
November 24, 2010 at 4:26 am #257989kmcpaParticipantI did ALL of the Yaegar questions twice (not just the ones assigned) and used Gleim to supplement weak areas. I don't feel like just doing the assigned questions were enough for me, but that's also because I learn better by doing A LOT of multiple choice questions. I wanted to make sure I left no stone unturned when I was studying for my retake. Some advice I would give is know your journal entries…its understandable to be nervous… i was def nervous a couple days before my exam..dude i'm still nervous… i don't want my score unless its a pass!
I would say just try your best and let the information flow. I am just hoping I passed because I really did put everything I had into my preparation and I don't want to take FAR in 2011.
I just felt frustrated when I was taking FAR because i expected the questions to be very similar to what I studied, but I didn't find that it was. I felt that with Aud and Reg questions were similar to Becker and I was ready for the twists and the turns, but with FAR its an entirely different animal. Good luck with the beast!!!

Do you have to do the JE on your own or there is a drop down menu wherein you can select the accounts to use and the amounts? How about ratios? thanks !
BEC 2/8/10 - 75 (studied hard & prayed less)
REG 5/15/10 - 88 (studied less but prayed hard)
AUDITING 8/9/10 - 79 (studied hard and prayed hard)
FAR 11/30/10 - 79 (studied hard and prayed hard) Thanks GOD! I'm DONENovember 24, 2010 at 12:04 pm #257991AnonymousInactiveJEs were drop downs on my exam. All my sim tabs had JEs to enter except one. It may have but there were proabably 30 blanks to fill in so I just skipped it due to the time constraint.
This exam was weird. The “basic theory” questions I have been used to seeing were not there. I had tons of computational questions and the theory ones were full of tricks. Like I would know a topic pretty well and they would throw some fact in to mess it up (or not?).
One of the sims I could not figure out where to begin because in the situation, they stated as of this date, these were the facts and then down below they added all this other stuff on the exact same date. So I am to assume the situation already included what they did? They could have made it much less ambiguous.
I have gone through all the 2009 Becker questions, the Wiley CD and the required ones in Yaeger to study. My exam was mostly like these questions, but a good many in the second and third testlets were not. Same material, just more in depth. I still can't find some of these questions.
I know it is a good sign to get harder testlets but if I got them all wrong, I still fail. I'm going to keep studying FAR. I don't have much hope to pass it, especially how bad I did on the simulations. The simulations were not hard, I just needed more time.
This may be my lowest score yet!
November 24, 2010 at 3:26 pm #2579922010PleaseParticipantI'm so keeping my fingers crossed for you guys…I'm trembling (on the inside) just thinking about taking this thing next week. It sounds like a more-than-basic-beginner's knowledge they are seeking on this thing. I'm studying my butt off, but from all the horror stories, I don't know if it will be enough, but it is all I have. Just so much stuff on this exam, including the kitchen sink.
Good luck to you all.

We'll see – I have a few more days and am off work until the exam. Still – it all depends on the beast the AICPA throws at me…I certainly expect this to be my lowest score.

It worked out ok.

Thanks for sharing your recent experience. I am taking my exam next week and I need to work more on simulations. Keep on having positive thoughts and you will pass. We will be seeing our score next month! Enjoy your thanksgiving with your family!

Here's hoping!
Good luck to everyone.
November 24, 2010 at 6:43 pm #257998hopefulParticipantI finished FAR with 30 minutes to spare, and here are two tricks I used:
First, the day before your test, go through the book and right down any formula or rule that you have trouble remembering. Don't worry about the ones you have down solid. Arrange all these things so that they fit on one page. Rewrite this page over and over until you don't need to look at the original to do so. This is called your brain-dump. When you get to the test, you have 10 minutes to read over the instructions that we've all seen before. This is when you right your brain-dump on your scratch paper. Keep an eye on the clock and try to finish it in 8 minutes just to be safe.
The second trick is the time allocation. I allotted 50 minutes for each MC testlet and 45 minutes for each sim. Write down this allocation at the top right of the brain dump so that it stands out. Your allocation might be different, but here's how mine looked (the pattern made it easy to remember)
End of 1: 3:10
End of 2: 2: 20
End of 3: 1:30
End of 4: 0:45
End of 5: 0:00
Don't waste time checking this every other question, though. I'd say maybe once at the half way mark and again towards the end of the testlet if you get to a tough question. Really utilize your Review button. If you get to a question that's taking you longer than 2 minutes, then guess, click review, and move on. If you finish the testlet before the allotted time, you can go back to it.
November 24, 2010 at 6:46 pm #257999hopefulParticipantEdit: third line: Right -> write; sorry…still burnt out from FAR 🙂
Also, an additional note: The brain dump really helped out, because I only had to recall each formula once. If I had multiple questions on the same formula, it saved a ton of time. If some of the questions ask for just a portion of a formula as a conceptual question, you'll have it right there in front of you and be able to turn a 5 minute question into a 30 second question.
